I am looking for opinions on using 15W-40 during the winter months here in Portland, OR. Historically the lowest winter temperatures have been -2 or -3 with average low temperatures in the 30s.
For the last 12 or so years I have used synthetics and never much worried about what oil to use in the winter. I simply used the same oil year round. Before I started using synthetics I had diesel Ford pickups and used SAE 30 in the summer and in the worst of the winter months I sometimes used SAE 10W. In my diesel days I lived in Iowa and the SAE 10W ensured easy starting. As my last F-250 had 386,000 miles on it when I sold it, the Delvac 1330 and 1310 I was using seemed to do the job.
I currently have a 2002 Jeep with the 4.0 engine. For the first 30,000 miles I used Chevron Supreme synthetic or the Texaco Havoline equivalent. This summer I tried Delo 400 15W-40, and I believe it is performing better than the synthetic I was using previously. I noticed that at less than 1,000 miles on my first Delo 400 oil change, the oil was just plain skanky. I changed the oil at 1,500 miles, and it stayed “clean” after that. I use an oil change interval of around 3,000 miles, and use Donaldson filers of the longer size as used on older Fords.
I do have easy access to Delo 400 in 10W-30, so I am debating if I should keep using the 15W-40, or switch to the 10W-30. My Jeep is parked in an underground parking garage the majority of the time but from time to time it will spend the night outside, as such I am eager to “hear” opinions from others.
Thanks
