15,000 mile OCI's on Mobil 1 ???

None of my vehicles have been spec'd for 5W-20, but I did use EP 5w30. I'd never run any oil for 15,000 miles though.

I'll bet you could go 15k no problem with that oil in your civic.

this is the first run with it....
on the second one, I'm getting a used oil analysis at 5k so i can prove to my fiance she doesn't need to sweat it.

thing is, i don't think the AAP or Super Tech filters can go that long.

I do the MC 5w20 at 5k OCI myself as well and have not tried the Mobil 1 Ext. but would not be surprised if it could go the 15k as I think MC 5w20 could possibly go 10k outside of harsh conditions.

VI is higher than their 5w30. Could this be a 0w20 in disguise?

I got a good Mobil 1 used oil analysis on my dad's Cadillac at 12,000 miles, but then they hold 7.5 quarts.

I was at Walmart the other day to pick up a couple quarts of PP, and they had one quart left of 5w-20EP...while having tons of everything else. Someone has to be buying it. I was tempted to get some, but I will use my current stock of PP before switching.

Thanks Buzzsaw, but I'm in Acworth (NW of ATL). I haven't stepped foot in a Wal-Mart in months, I'll have to check next time I'm there.

Extended OCIs are great if you rack up the miles out on the open road, but I don't think they are a good idea for city cars.

I drive 100 miles a day, all highway. I am going through a 10K OCI right now. I will send in my oil to Dyson to see how it does. Rarely do I drive into the city. Everything is right here on the open road.

Would you guys recommend changing the filter half way through, and topping off?

No need to change filters and top off. Be sure to check the fluid level every 3-5K, especially in the F150, and top off as needed. I've run 10K OCIs on the regular M1 with no problems. If you're driving alot of highway miles, go for it. Extended OCIs also help justify the higher cost of synthetic oils. If you're stuck on 3-5K OCIs synthetics are a waste of money for most applications, however, if you don't mind paying extra for M1, Amsoil or GC etc. and can go 7.5K-15K and successfully resist the urge to change the oil the use of synthetic oil will pay for itself.

Be sure to read Mobil 1 Extended Performance's fine print. If you are under warranty, they say to follow the manufactures OCI. If you drive under severe conditions (which are most people), follow the manufacturers OCI. The 15,000 miles (or 1 year whichever is first), only applies to cars out of warranty and for normal miles (does not include excessive idling, mostly short trips, dusty conditions, extreme temperatures, etc.). So the 15,000 mile oil change is really warranted for a pretty small percentage of vehicles.

Tim, I'd rather go with Mobil's recommendations. Under "ideal" conditions, both Amsoil and Mobil 1 just make it to 15k miles. 25k and 35k is wishful thinking in most cases.
