I have a 2012 Volkswagen Beetle 2.5L and my grandmother has a 2012 Eos 2.0L TSI. Our cars are both due for an oil change. Should we stick with the same oil that the dealership has been putting in it which is Castrol 5w40? My boyfriend runs Mobil 1 5w30 in his VWs and he changed my oil in my Beetle once now and that's what he used. I have been doing some reading and it seems like a lot of people use 0w40. Need recommendations!

"Regular" mobil 1 5w30 does not carry the VW approval (VW502)
Mobil 1 0w-40 does; that is why people use that.
You should read your owners manual on the proper oil to use.

Agree with simple_gifts above. Stick to an oil that meets VW 502.00 spec, especially if you're still under warranty. But even post warranty, it's a good idea.
Or a 5w40 castrol should also carry the spec

Yeah X-Clean is Mid-SAPS. So far I think it is combination of lower SAPS, running car hard often, and changing oil at 5K.
Hopefully EPA will be able to lower sulfur in 2017.

VW 505.01 has a lower SAPS content than oils that just meet VW 505. I would consider an oil that meets 502, 505, and 505.01. The current Valvoline 5w40 meets those specs, and NAPA has it.

VW 505.01 has a lower SAPS content than oils that just meet VW 505. I would consider an oil that meets 502, 505, and 505.01. The current Valvoline 5w40 meets those specs, and NAPA has it.

Running Castrol 0w40 in my 2.5, you can typically find it on sale at Walmart for $21.50/5qt jug. I normally pick up 3 at a time for 2 oil change worth. I also found the dealer OEM oil filters are cheaper, picked some up a little while ago for under $9/ea, while the parts house was almost $13. I did run the Castrol 5w40 (before I was on BITOG, heh..), but it was almost $9 per quart. If I was a betting man, the run of regular Mobil 1 5w30 didn't hurt it, 2.5's aren't known to be hard on oil or very high strung. I'd go back to the approved however.

or if you want to spend extra money, Mobil 1 turbo diesel truck.

Castrol Edge 0w40 does come close, at 1.15
