I used Castrol GTX on my '04 CRV from 90-100k. Sump is 5.6qt, makueup oil was .5l. Lab was Polaris IN.

Honda's recommended interval is 10k.

It's a pity the lab does not have a set of universal averages for the engine, because without them it's difficult to know if the Lead figure is a tad high or not. The fuel dilution is of concern and if it's not because you spend a lot of time in traffic or failed to warm up the oil before the sample was taken, I would be concerned over that figure. Castrol GTX is a good basic oil and I'm impressed at how low the Iron figure is.
Does anyone know where the Sodium came from as I don't think it is very high in GTX,
also it would be interesting to see if using Castrol Edge 5w30 improves the figures.

Castrol GTX uses a solid dose of Sodium, thats where it came from. It uses almost the same amounts sodium as valvoline. 2.9% Fuel is elevated but not a cause for concern yet. Get some UOA from a GTDI engine of 5% @ 5k OCI, then you will be a little more concerned lol

I put 5w30 Castrol Magnatec full synth A3/B3/B4 in BiL's CR-V.

Not sure what mileage he is going to run it but they are not spec ex for anything less than semi synth in the UK, and from memory the OCI is 6months/6k miles.

I wonder how a full synth or semi synth would have performed in the same vehicle?

Thanks for posting the UOA.

Yeah a UOA may not tell the whole story. According to the service records of the 02 Camry in my signature, the prior owner ran Castrol GTX for extended intervals of 7-10k since new. It was a sludge/varnish disaster that could not stay running when I bought it at 108k. Took several OCI's and additives to clean up. But its still suffering the consequences - burnt valve seals and hardened gasket/seals that leak. I would say he hasn't been extending GTX that often if ever before this.

I still think it was a good UOA. And learn how to quote, that was taxing to read.

Thanks for getting this UOA. I always take my Civic's oil to 10k, but synthetic only. I was concerned about doing the same with conventional, but this gives me confidence.

Thanks for the input, y'all.

To answer some questions- I don't know what it's like under the VC; there's been no reason to have it off since a) the CRV 2.4 has a timing chain, and b) the valve adjust interval isn't until 120k IIRC. The view from the oil fill is limited, but I'll look more carefully when next I'm in the garage.

The fuel... is probably from my pre-change warmup. I lazed out and just ran it at idle until the VC was warm to the touch. I'll hammer on it next time

This is the first analysis I've gotten, but it's the second GTX 10k interval. I replaced it with same, so I'll get another UOA on the same setup in probably 8 months or so.

I didn't think it looked too bad either; was wondering if Honda were dreaming on that 10k OCI but I guess not!

Was that GTX 10/40 or 5/30?? The cheaper 10/40 does not seem to last as long as the 5/30.

The oil held up surprisingly well...I've been on Castrol a while now but it doesn't get a lot of love here. People would be slobbering over this same UOA if it was PYB.
