Gary,

10,000 mile OCI, BMW engine, plenty of cold starts and still with a TBN 0f 2.2...I'm sorry I just don't see the problem.

..the oil, on the otherhand, from an additive level, is all but spent. What other elements am I ignoring? That is, educate me on what other properties that this oil retained besides producing low wear numbers. I can't interpret the data.

The TBN says that it has reached the end of its useful life (or very near to it).

Gary,

The disconnect between us must be our relative expectations for how long an OCI an oil should retain a "high" TBN. If I hit 10K with a TBN (rated under the new methodology which results in lower numbers), I'd say the oil has done its job AND THEN SOME. In other words, I expect it to be spent at 10K...if it's not, that is just icing on the cake. Remember, too, the oil got no "help" along the way. There were no top ups to add any "booster" shots to the original fill. I am thrilled at these results.

Also keep in mind that cold winter conditions cause the TBN to drop faster as well.

Well ...I'm just selfish, I guess. I want my cake and eat it too.

Now I must admit, due to supportive evidence, including my own, that XOCI is not a given. I however, am of the belief that is possible in any vehicle. The only difference is on what our criteria for "success" is.

It is a great report. I would not be satisfied with it however. Since nobody has told me anything else that was wrong with the oil aside from TBN nearing its limits (I mean I'm too ignorant to see anything) AND given the EXCELLENT wear numbers....I'd want to fix the "weak link" in this chain and continue to extend the OCI until I saw an increase in wear metals.

I always want to push the envelope until you get no rate of return on it. Hence perhaps another oil with a more robust aditive package would have allowed the same wear numbers with a residual TBN of 4+. If you saw that you probably would have said "..you could have gone longer..."(am I correct?). Since I've been introduced to UOA (here), I view it as an instructional guide to continued improvement.

Don't get me wrong ...great wear numbers!!

It must be the "collector of fine junque`" in me. When I see just one thing that scraps something ...I "feel" the word "wasted".
