You should be between the add and full marks on the dip stick. You should be fine. Only need to add if you're below the "add" line.
1/2 quart on a 9-14 quart transmission isn't all that much. Similar to being 1/4 quart low on a 5-6 quart engine.

and if the transmission is over filled by 1/2 quart (my dad's car) would that create any problems?(dealer's fault)
While it probably won't there are cautions in owner's manuals that say not to fill any higher than the full mark....remove any excess. So you never can be sure. So if it's easy to take out that 1/2 quart I would (or bring it back to the dealer and have them suck or drain the 1/2 quart).

My experience with having low transmission fluid is that if the level is too low, shifting issues and/or lack of movement will be obvious.

I wonder how many cars owners who had their transmission professionally serviced at least one time are either over or under filled? I got lazy a few times over the years and had my transmission serviced professionally. I can remember having to tweak the level each time I had someone service it, always overfilled. Quite a bit in some cases. Lesson learned.

A neighbor's Camaro took a long time to go into gear because it was 40 oz. (1.25 qt.) low on transmission fluid.
The transmission can try to go into gear and wear its clutches by slipping or slam into gear once there's finally enough pressure.
There was no mechanic to blame as there was no maintenance involved. 11 years of neglect saw the fluid evaporate. There were no leaks.

If I pull the AT dipstick out right now on my Camry in a 45F garage, the level will show overfilled. Warm the thing up for ten minutes and the level shows between cold/hot. Never have been able to make sense out of that *^%@#$%^ dipstick. I just refill with same amount that came out. That's worked for ten years. Bah Humbug on AT dipsticks.
