The misses and I just traded in our Nissan Versa with the HR16 engine for a 2013 Nissan Sentra with the MR8 engine, looking through the manual last night I noticed the Sentra calls for 0W20 and the Versa called for 5W30... both 2013 engines. Kinda strange I thought...

I really don't like using a 0W20 in anything, call me old fashioned but that stuff is like water! You guys think any harm will come from using 5W30's?

I would stick to using 0w-20. Using any other grade may void your warranty.

Modern engines do very well and are designed for thin oils, so use 0w-20 with confidence!

No harm will come of 0W20 for your new car. Don't do the old fashioned stuff half way. Put in 20 weight for the winter and 30 weight for the summer. That was the routine when I was first driving.

+1 this.

Anyone out there hear yet how these new MR8 engines are on oil? They are timing chain driven and not the typical belt as most small 4cyls are so I was concerned about it being tougher on oil, Nissan OCI is 3750, which to me sounds awfully short compared to most nowadays.

You just got the vehicle and you already know that the oil "is like water"? When, hot? Compared to 5w30? You actually see a difference? I don't, it drains the same as far as I can tell. And when cold, it pours in about the same, at least to me. Not at all like water BTW.

Yet another post of "it's like water". Use what the manufacturer specifies. Or do you know better? Seriously, do you?

And 3750 miles is the severe schedule, isn't it? Are you operating it in one of the listed environments for Schedule 1?

Use what the manufacturer recommends. Even the new GM V8 trucks now run 0W-20, and they can tow many tons. OW-20 has to be good, don't sweat it.

Dont worry, 0w20 will protect just fine in your engine. Ive been running 0w20 in my 2006 Accord 2.4 and its quiet and smooth on it. Has great wear numbers on UOA as well.

I'm still under warranty, and drive enough that I have to do two oil changes per year. I have been sticking to cheaper oil that meets Ford's spec for summer (this summer was Mobil Super 5000) and Mobil 1 0w-20 for winter. I've changed back and fourth between conventional, blend and syn a few times now. My engine should not only be leaking at ever seal, but blowing plumes of blue smoke! ... according to some.

Once I don't have to worry about dumping the oil after 6 months to keep a warranty, I'll use a different OCI plan.

I like the Valvoline in my sig after trying many oils. No bearing knocking or pison slap unless you get carboned up - then yopu have to give it the Italian Tuneup and all is quite again.
The Idemitsu had been noisy regardless - so I considered that too light in this app and the Edge w/Ti too viscous though it Edgeconsistent and clean running like the Valvoline. The Edge was very, very pricey.

I'd use Mobil 1 0W20, IMO it is one of the best 0W20 oils you can buy. Mobil 1 0W20 SN and Castrol EDGE 0W20 SM version were extremely quiet in my 08 Liberty. No difference in mpg with the thinner high VI old formula Castrol EDGE.

My experience is with previous use of 0w20, haven't looked at this one yet and won't til I drain it...

Yes, I do feel sometimes I know better, been an ASE Master for many years and built a LOT of engines and done MANY oil changes. I still can't help but think there is a reason that European manuf's use thicker oils. Our drive here in the US is for EPA and Economy, NOT longevity and protection, just plain facts my friend!!

No 3750 is standard OCI for Nissan, not severe. I don't even see where a severe schedule is listed in my manual for this car. I do almost all highway miles, 50 mile commute to work one way, 5 days a week.

Either way, you guys have helped my confidence so at least while under warranty I'll use 0w20 in her. May even try the ever so popular Toyota stuff...

So this doesn't apply to your vehicle?

Plain facts? Where are the facts? Honestly I have never seen facts about the oil viscosity differences between the US and other locations. People like to say it is due to CAFE and it may very well be, but I have never seen proof.

And even if it is, where are the facts that 20 weight oils are deficient in protection?

I haven't made it into my service and maintenance guide yet, the actual owners manual only lists the 3750mile OCI as far as I can see... I'll look more into it, if I can go 7500 miles on an OCI that would save me a lot of time and money!! Thanks for pointing that out!

Sorry I was being harsh, I apologize.

Last Saturday my neighbor across the street and I were talking. He just bought a brand new truck and I saw he had it in the driveway, working on it somehow. I went over there and he was changing the oil even though he just got the truck about two weeks ago. He explained to me how it had 20-weight oil in it, and how it was "like water" and how that was bad for the engine. He was putting in 10w30 instead. I asked him what the manual called for and it was a 20-weight. I asked him why would the manufacturer specify an oil that was bad for the engine?

Ehh, this is the same guy who bragged to me about how much "drop" he has on his trailer hitch. So I chafed at the "like water" statement and sorry.
