hi,
I recently picked up an 08 impala ls with the 3.5l at an auction. By the time i got it the oil had been used for about 10,000 miles. The oil looked super black, and missing some. Then i took it to the local gas station, and had valvoline put in it, Changed it at 2500mi and used service pro. Now it's just past the 2000mi mark, and i decided to do my own oil changes. I don't mind spending a little more for a good product but not too much. BTW it does not burn/leak oil.

What would you guys recommend, Also i was wondering if i should switch over to a HM formula ( Valvoline Maxlife, Pennzoil High Mileage. etc. )

EDIT: 80% city driving ( very short trips Work and school are less than a mile away from home) 20% HW, and I live in Michigan, hope this helps.

After the way my fellow coworkers treat these cars, which are run mostly 24 hours a day, with Canadian petrol (not a bad thing) and the lowest bidder filters, I can tell you that it will run on anything. Patrol Guide states that the operator must check oil level before each shift. Like that's gonna happen. They can be a quart low for weeks...

You get the idea.
 
I have a 2008 Impala that was a "program" car...had 20,000 miles when I bought it from a local dealer. Out of 6 cars on the lot, this one was the cleanest with the quietest engine of the bunch. I have to say the car has been excellent. 62,000 miles on the clock and the only problem has been a defective wiper motor (replaced under warranty). I'm using Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 with a P1 filter and it doesn't use any oil in the 5-6,000 mile intervals I run it. I've been very happy with the car...comfortable, quiet and I've seen as high as 34 mpg on the highway...31-32 mpg routinely if driven under 70 mph. I think GM did a good job with these engines (the 3.5 and 3.9L "high value" engines which have VVT) as they corrected the gasket issues of the previous generation 3.4 and 3.8L (2000-05 models). Other improvements on the "new" 2006 (current) model were a stiffened front end,a revised (better)interior, suspension refinements and standard 4 wheel disc brakes (stability/traction control and ABS became standard in 2009 I believe). My only complaint is the limited rear leg room for a car this size. There may be better cars in this segment but you can get some terrific deals on the Impala. I'm also curious as to how many miles are on the one you have.

The car has 87973 miles on it. I bought it back in march 2010 with 83500 for 7800 USD. Since then i had to replace a solonoid canister near the fuel cap ( $60 no labor did it myself) at around 86000. At 85000 it started leaking engine coolant, but that was a simple gasket ($35 no labor had my uncle do it)

HC302: I'm curious as to what you mean about using 'Canadian petrol'?
Middle Village is a long way from Canada.

PS: Do we know for sure that the I-M gasket problem has been corrected on the GM 60* V6?
It really wasn't a bad motor except for that issue.
 
At this point I'm leaning toward Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and a pureone purolator pl25288. What do you guys think? Also where could i get the best price at.

My Sister has an 06 with the 3.5L. I had her running Quaker State HP( now Ultimate Durability )and it didn't do well for some reason. I swapped her over to Kendall GT1 full synthetic and it has done a very good job. PepBoys( if you have one near you )carries Kendall and it is pretty cheap. I got her some the other day and it had gone up a little. To $5.29 p/qt from the $4.99 it was. Very good oil and one to consider.
 
Mobil 1 is a good price to performance synthetic as well as Pennzoil Platinum. Either one is a good bet for colder weather and good wear protection. Either can be purchased for around $23 for 5 quart jugs at Walmart.

I would recommend the A/C Delco filter or a Puroaltor PureOne if you feel like having the extra filtration ability.
