PITA,work truck. Gas tank isnt venting properly is my guess. Out of curiosity , I would love a link to the EVAP system for this heap. TIA

Is this in an area that uses the vapor recovery boots on the gas pump nozzle?

My '04 Silverado is finicky as well. Pulling the nozzle out by an inch or so helps a lot.,

I dont know if this happens on the E150, but on the Vics if you top off the tank by trying to fill after it shuts off can flood the evap canister and prevent proper venting.

There's a TSB on this very problem from GM, but I think it refers to a design problem in the nozzle used by some manufacturers.

Yes, I've found that the stations that use nozzles made by "Husky" are much worse to control... and "OPW" brand nozzles work much better. So, I simply avoid the stations with Husky.

Andyd - are you always filling at the same station?

Nope, Zero brand loyalty. Ive tried giving the filler an air gap by holding the nozzle out a bit. No dice. I can barely crack the flow and fill at about a gallon a minute until my hand cramps.

Plus one on that. My Crown Victoria patrol car is terrible for this... the solution is to back the nozzle out about an inch then put it on full blast. Been working ever since.

Ford had a recall on the Contour for the fuel flapper valve causing this problem. I encountered this on my car.

It's possible there is a faulty flapper valve in the truck.

I'm not saying there is a recall or TSB for this sort of thing. But it could be something in the tank as well.

If you have the problem trying to fill from a gas can, then it's not likely the nozzle.

Sometimes it works better to hold the nozzle "gangsta style", twisted 90 degrees from normal.

I am now going to survey what brand nozzles the stations in my area are equipped with.

Thanks, but that did nada. It isnt the filler, the tank isnt venting.

My 02 TJ is the same way ..but not as bad. For me it was totally dependent on the flow rate of the lowest setting at the pump for the station in question. I slight backing off of the insertion usually solved it.

Make yourself up your own prop that will gauge the handle opening at a lower rate. I've found most of the pumps fairly uniform in delivery ..only being altered by the number of people fueling at the time (feeling the shocks of the next guy slamming the shutoff when he's topping off).

That is, the nozzles appear fairly generic (to me) but where the operator sets the automatic stops appears adjustable ..and we don't typically carry screw drivers (or whatever is needed) ..nor do we perform surgery on other's equipment, while refueling (not to mention probably having to do it many places).

I guess it would be easier to figure out what the problem is.

When I was a gas jockey ..one customer had a some Wagoneer type rig (maybe it was an IH) ..anyway, it had a filler on the passenger side front fender to the rear of the wheel opening for the auxiliary tank. He said it worked fine with his gravity feed system at home ..but the aerated dispensing of the service station pumps made it about 12oz at a clip. If I had known he was coming in, I would have a special funnel handy to allow the stuff to deaerate before hitting the filler. Naturally this would neutralize the shut off feature.

LOL
It has a 33 gallon tank that I try to top off when it is down to 1/4. It takes me 20 minutes to pump 20~25 gallons into this pig.
