My neice has an 05 Honda Civic LX-1.7L 4cyl auto tranny. She calls me the other day with some partial information. Says her CEL is on and she took it to the dealer($89.00) to have it coded. She didn't give me the code # but say her receipt mentions the rear O2 sensor(brakes, cabin a/f etc). My question is:
How many O2 or A/F ratio sensors does this Civic have and where are they? I'm currently looking up part#'s, and the way some autoparts sites word the description can be confusing even for me.
Sounds like there could be two sensors but, maybe 3. I realize that I need the code # and I will get that soon but, in the mean time any help will be appriciated.

O2 sensor after 4 years. Yikes! should have two, replace the forward one first. But verify first.

How many miles on her Civic ?
The sensor should easily last 100,000 miles.

Stay away from the universal type O2 sensors (Bosch) and buy a Denso if it really is dead.

Don't quite know how many miles are on the car but I see lot's of O2 sensors going before 100,000 miles. I replaced all 3(O2, A/F) in my wifes Lexus by 60,000. According to some "Reliability Reports" that I have frequented, these were the first issue on her Lexus. Then sludging engines and then tranny failures. GREAT!

But anyway, keep the comments comming please.
Yes JHZR2, 2 sensors is what Im thinking also. I will verify first.

A 4 cyl engine should have just one catalytic converter, so thus the pre-cat sensor (that drives the ECU) and the post-cat that ust verifys efficiency of the cat.

I think it depends on what type of the emissions the 4 cyl has.

Some PZEV or Kalifornia/New York/Mass cars have more than one cat even with a 4 cyl. They have secondary converters with upstream and down stream sensors.

So you could see easy 4 O2 sensors with a 4 cyl.

And all 4 cyl Subarus have at least 4 O2 sensors. PZEV Subarus even more!

I have the same car, same year. My shop manual is at home, but I will get back with you tomorrow morning if you still need the help. See if she can call the stealer and get the code it spit out.

Btw, 155k miles and never had to replace an 02 sensor.

As always actual code would be handy. Can think of a few... heater resistance off, low output voltage, "lazy"-- not switching etc. Sometimes this can be a real cut & dry diagnosis.

A rear O2 sensor code is a bad sensor or a bad cat.

I think I said do the front because I missed the "rear" part. Spot on, do the rear if it says the rear, otherwise look for about $1500 for an OE cat... which you cant really scrimp on if the car actually gets tested for emissions.

Yeah, we have time as her state inspection isn't up til the end of February and she says the car is running fine. Her driving style is to and from work with lot's of short trips since she live near everything.

I beleive the dealer printed out everything that we need to know, I just need to see the printout.

I do notice that amongst our family/friends, those who pile on the miles get better use out of their vehicles such as getting the 100,000 miles out of their sensors, brakes, exhaust systems etc. And those who do alot of short trips are replacing items much sooner(at least in a mileage sence), especially here in the north where our winters are brutal. And I do beleive winters do take their toll on vehicles. Can never turn brake rotors for example, their too rusted/pitted (looks like you went through them with a hammer and chisel).

Check your emissions warranty, they vary state to state, you may be covered. I have a 04 civic and my fwd O2 sensor went out a few months ago (75k). My poor car lives life a few miles at a time and i think that was the cause. To my surprize the sensor came right out with little effort. Good luck and shop around,
Greg

Ask about service bulletins. There is one that might cover this issue. Acura has a similar one.

Basically what happens is that the heater circuit inside the sensor fails due to condensation buildup. The fix is to replace the sensor and re-flash the ECM. The ECM turns the heater circuit on later so the condensation burns off first. If you just replace the sensor, it will happen again.

(Bulletin may not cover your car, but find out before replacing the A/F sensor) Re-flashing the ECM takes about 15 minutes and a Honda scan tool is required.
