04 Navigator ABS Light On

I being the nice husband... I washed and detailed the wifes 04 Navigator last weekend. I simple greened the engine bay, and washed off with garden hose. After sitting for an hour or so, I refired the 5.4L and put the trans in reverse to back out of the driveway, and the dang ABS light came on. As well as the Check Advance Track light. It has been 1 full wk. I figured after drying out, both lights would have went off.

Maybe I knocked a sensor wire off, or loose?

Anyone have any ideas?


Also... For the love of God, I can't find the fuel filter. Can someone with knowledge of this motor direct me to it's location? I hope it's one I can change myself with normal tools instead of having to have special tools to change.

Check all the ABS connections at the ABS pump maybe even pull them apart and shoot some contact cleaner in them.Maybe some water got down the spark plugs boots,you may have to remove the COP to dry them out.
Fuel filter is on the inside of the left frame rail in the front door area,there is a protective cover you need to open with a flat blade screw driver.You need a line release tool.

Travis: Thanks! Now where is the ABS pump located? I don't know my way around these 5.4L.

Looks like there are a few fuel line release tools for fords, is there a ford mechanic in the house that can direct me in the right direction of the correct release tool for an 04?

Either of the two middle sets for fuel line use. Truth be told, I like the cheapie plastic (blue and grey) plastic tools for FoMoCo lines. Seem to work better than the aluminum set. I would be tempted to buy both sets to cover my a** though.

Punisher: do I have to disconnect the battery before replacing the fuel filter? since there is pressure on the line.

Disconnecting the battery will do nothing.

I have found the pulling the fuse, end trying to start the engine does nothing. The gas is not compressable, so the first few drops to come out will drop the pressure to zero anyway. Just have a catch pan, and you can put a small rag over the line when you disconnect the fitting. You will get a volume of fuel drain from the lines. Use common sense and keep electrical lights a distance away when you disconnect.

Did a search on u tube... nothing really for the 5.4L ford, but I guess they are all basically the same... I will disconnect the battery and find the fuel pump relay and pull it, the crank the motor a few times... Then disconnect the first fuel line with a rag over it... very slowly if i can. Thanks fellas.

In the first picture you see the ABS unit with the lines.On the left side of the unit there is a large wiring connector.
If it got soaked,remove the connector and spray some contact cleaner.

The second and third pictures show various connectors that are labelled brake.. Do the same to these.

SyN, have you done this before? First time can be an adventure in frustration using the disconnect tool. It's a special motion of push, pull and release. Can take 30-60 min if your not familiar. After that its a breeze.

Bluestream: Yes it is my first with dealing with these new mickey mouse fuel connections... My wifes other Suv's, all I have ever needed were my 2 fuel line wrenches and bam in 10min the fuel filter was changed. This 04 Navi with all the bells and whistles is turning into a PITA. My 7.3L PSD takes me 5min. I'm not Scared though. I will buy the tool and give it my what for. My wife said she would place our bible and 20oz of holy water beside my tool box, because she is for sure I will need both after doing this. I think she was serious.
