Hi all, just picked up an '04 Civic LX non V-tec. It has 20,000 miles. I am using Mobil 1 5w-20 with mobil M1-110 extended performance oil filter. Can I go 10,000 miles OCI? I drive 60 miles a day round trip all highway. Thanks

Exxon-Mobil asks that you shorten the first OCI in a used vehicle -- then go normal length with the 2nd OCI.

If this were my vehicle & this was Mobil 1 Extended Performance (not the diluted regular M-1), I would drain the first one at 6K -- then at 9K of the 2nd OC, I would loosen the oil pan bolt & drain enough for a Blackstone used oil analysis. You should have your results by the time you reach 10K.

Yes, there are quite a few guys here with Civics running 5k OCI's with conventional 5w-20 oils like Pennzoil or Havoline. Mobil 1 5w-20 should easily handle 10k OCI's with your driving routine.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance could void his warranty. By looking the voa comparison between Mobil 1, Mobil 1 Extended Performance. They don't really have much difference. Its just a marketing gimmick IMHO

Honda reccomends a 750 mile or 10k mile OCI anyway, right? Doa short interval and then go 10k, youll be fine!

Absolutely and positively. Honda recommends 10,000 mile OCI's with CONVENTIONAL 5w20 oil. It also recommends every other (20k) (oil) FILTER changes. So running 10,000 miles on Mobil 1 5w20 is simply a no brainer in my view. However if one is inclined to know and pay for an oil analysis, that is always an option. Keep in mind if you DIY, the cost is like $15.60 (cost me) for 3.4 qts of Mobil 1 5w20 and 2-5 dollars for a filter. Fram is the supplier of the Honda oem filters.

I am currently on 9k miles (19k total) on Mobil 1 0w20.

I am doing 10k OCI on a 2003 Civic with Mobil 1 5W-20 grade SM oil. It's a little bit more expensive than 5k conventional oil OCI but saves time because the oil change wastes my time once a year instead of twice a year. But I change the oil filter at every change instead of Honda recommended interval of every two oil changes.

I agree with Ruking77.

I run Mobil 1 0W-20 and PureOne or Mobil 1 filters at 7K intervals on our 2004 Honda Element with the 2.4L VTEC.

Granted we are in the 'severe' service category, so I don't go 10K.

I'm not so comfortable changing the oil filter every other 10K oil change.

I just bought PureOne filters for the Elelment on sale for $4.40 each.

Compared to gas prices, what's $5 for a decent oil filter every 7000 miles?

I don't agree with that! Don't know what VOAs you been reading, but the ones here show a difference in add-packs -- plus there's a difference in SuperSyn base oils.

I did not know that EP 5w-20 isn't available yet. So with that news, I sure would not go into double-digit (10K+) OCIs with SM (regular) Mobil 1.

I personally looked with a lot of interest at the Mobil 1 Extended Performance. It is reputed to have up to 50% more of the ingredients that count. (see VOA's of Mobil 1 Extended Performance) Obviously the used oil analysis of the same will show if the marketing matches the real world. However in one of my applications, (5w30) it does not meet the GM 4178 M standard. It surely does not meet the FORD/Honda standard for 5w20. However, my take is truly almost anything will make it pass the meager warranty period of 3 years/36,000 miles. While I have run 3 vehicles app 250k each, on 15,000 mile OCI's with Mobil 1 5w30, (and one with 2/3k OCI's with conventional oil), I only have app 20k on the Honda Civic VP. So in truth I will have to get back with you all at the 36k mark (don't think I will make three years, given 18k per year) and at the 250,000 mile mark. or 13/14 years!

Come on guys. 10k miles in a 20k mile Honda Civic as an OCI is peanuts, even on dino.

This gentleman could go 15k miles on off-the-shelf Mobil 1, EP or non-EP, with the amount of highway driving done, easily.

20k miles is nothing on a new one, and the oil should be still fine, even if the factory fill was never changed. Personally I wouldn't bother with any shortened OCI, just stick with 10k on dino, or do a used oil analysis with synthetic at 10k, and go from there.

I also have an '04 Civic Non-VTEC which I bought new. Since the first oil change at 1500 miles I've used Mobil 1 5w30 with 6K OCI's. It now has approx 29K miles. It's my first experience with synthetics and I'm amazed at how clean the oil remains even up to 6K. And the engine doesn't consume one drop of oil between changes. I decided not to use the recommended 5W-20 and from what I've been reading here it really doesn't make a difference anyway. I just feel more comfortable with the 30W vs the 20W. The Civic sees mostly highway driving but every once in a while I explore the upper rev ranges.

I'd rather have that extra bit of protection rather than fuel economy.

I have an '03 Civic VTEC with 15K miles. It sees mostly in-town driving. I have used Mobil 1 5w30 since the first oil change at 4K miles, and I have had similar obersavtions and experience as Axe Man, except I don't rev too high.

I think it's pretty much a waste to use Mobil 1 for 6k OCI if the driving conditions are not severe.

Perhaps so. It's what I feel comfortable with based upon the facts as I interpret them. It may be a little excessive. Who cares? It's my money and time. The important thing is that the engine is protected. Conversely I would not feel comfortable doing a 10K OCI on Mobil 1 5w20. I'm not convinced "thin is in" yet.

You'll be fine...run it. I run Mobil 1 5w-20 for 10,000 mile OCI's in my wifes 05 Honda Accord and in my work Civic. They perform awesome.

Do it.
