03 Subaru Legacy front Jack point?

For any owners out there of 2000 to 04 Subaru Legacy’s, where is the front jacking point located to raise the front of a 2003 Legacy wagon? Also, where is the best place to put jack stands for the raised front?

The jack point is on the front crossmember

The jack stands go on the pinch welds underneath the doors.
Is the front crossmember just behind the oil pan on an 03?

Looking around the net, I’ve read some things that putting the jack stands on the pinch welds will cause them to fold over if you don’t have the adapters that distribute the weight to either side of the pinch welds. Could this be true?

I think so, but it will be obvious where to jack it when you're under the car and see it :)

I've never had that problem, except in a car that was extremely rusty.

There is a small plate with 4 bolts in the middle of the front crossmember.

So what I’m trying to accomplish is changing the oil without needing to lay on the floor. When I have changed the oil myself in the past, I just used to lay down in front of the car and reach underneath to loosen the drain bolt and unscrew the filter. Because of some recent leg issues I can’t lay on the floor and then get back up again. I’m hoping to get the front jacked up enough to be able to sit on a wheeled stool and reach the oil filter. I have an oil extractor to get the oil. I’ve looked into ramps but I don’t think they raise the car up high enough.

You could do it with an AC Hydraulics DK13HLQ or DK20HLQ but putting jackstands under the rockers at such an angle becomes problematic.

Do you have space for HUGE homebrew wooden ramps or steel ramps like they use at car dealers/car washes? Basically mini-RTI ramps?

You might be ahead to look into a Quickjack or other home hobbyist lift. I'm sorry to hear of your physical limitations, that's gotta be frustrating.

I should be able to get back to normal in the near future (recovering from an injury) so I hate to spend extra money on a device I hopefully won’t need long term. I used to work at a couple of dealerships as a teenager and I remember those ramps you are talking about. Knowing how far I needed to reach with the car on level ground, I’m sure that putting the front of the car on Jack stands with give me access to the filter while sitting down.

Oof, you lost me at not wanting to buy tools ;)

Seriously, I wish you a speedy recovery!

Follow up with what you finally do. If I were in your shoes I might just swallow my pride and pay for an oil change, but I'd probably avoid quickie lubes personally. Are there BITOGers near you??

get better soon :)

Are there any self-service garages near you with a lift? Or family/friends? Or just pay someone on Craigslist $10 to do it.

I have my Dad’s vintage Wards floor jack circa early 70’s. It doesn’t lift as high as the AC Hydraulics jacks but higher than most modern jacks. The thing is a tank and heavy as hell but still works great. My next door neighbor would probably replace my oil filter for me. He works on cars and builds motorcycles. The Subaru dealer near me has a new current special of a full synthetic oil change for $29.99 but they told me that they wouldn’t do a synthetic oil change on my car because it was engineered for conventional oil. They will do the 29.99 deal with conventional oil so I might still do that.

Best to get a fluid extractor for the oil they work pretty good on Subarus after the engine is warm. You still have to change oil filter and getting a jack to go chair high won't be easy. If you will be back to normal after an oil/filter change ask a friend to give you a hand. I have the same problem getting up and down fortunately I have a buddy who will do it for a few beers or a pizza. I will have to pay a shop if he can't or gets tired of doing it. I wish you well.

I did just get a fluid extractor very similar to this one. Best thing I’ve bought in a long time. I just completed changing the oil on my Mini Cooper and my Honda Element with it. The Mini cartridge filter is accessible from the top of the engine and the Element filter is accessible from reaching down the back of the engine from the the top.
