Ok here's the latest analysis for my '03 Saab 9-5 Aero. I'm waiting for Terry to get back with his thoughts.

The car had 45k at the time of the oil change. I used a PureOne filter, no make up oil, and the engine runs well.

From when I bought it through 40k, I used a bottle of Techron Concentrate every 5k. At 42.5k I started using FP60, mainly out of curiousity. So it was on that for the second half of this interval.

The wear #s look good, the iron and lead in particular are both well below the previous reading and the universal averages. The flashpoint is a bit low, which I'm guessing is related to that 1.3% fuel reading. I'm expecting Terry to have some insight into that.

Here's a link to the previous analysis, done back around 15k, of a mystery dealer oil:

It is a perfectly good UOA. I'm surprised the moly number isn't higher, but I havent' paid specific attention to M1 5W-40 in the past so maybe this is typical. I thought they used more.

Watch the fuel.

Can I ask how you like your Saab? I like how they get so much Hp out of a little 4 cyl engine. The EPA mileage ratings are great! What type of mileage do you get?

I also don't understand the difference between the 9-5 and the 9-3. All of the dimensions of the two cars are almost identical, including the weight. What are the differences?

We've been very happy with the 9-5. At the real selling price it's a good value. It's roomy, very comfortable, has loads of features, excellent build and materials quality, and drives really nicely.

In the days of 245 hp Altimas and 240 hp Accords, the 250 hp rating of the engine isn't spectacular, but it's got loads of torque, great passing power, and is nice and smooth. We get ~27-28 mpg on average in mixed city/highway driving. On highway trips we generally get 30-32 mpg depending on the conditions. It's a 5 speed manual.

The 9-3 is a bit smaller in most dimensions I believe. I'm pretty sure the 9-5 has it beat in rear seat room and trunk space mostly. I'd expect the next version (whenever they get around to making it) to grow in size to put some more distance there.

M1 SUV could just be the best 5w-40 on the market, especially now that Amsoil has weakend the AFL considerably. The SUV never shows bad resluts. I wonder why Terry said awhile back he doesn't often see good UOA's with M1 SUV?

Wow, that is great mileage. I thought with the Aero engine it might be a bit lower. Makes the G35 look like a gas hog.

Thanks for the info.

You dog! I hope my analysis comes out so well. Fuel in the oil. Thanks for that wonderful PCV system, Saab! You have an Aero, though. They seem to be a little more resistant to "the troubles" than those of us w/ the base 2.3t.

The 9-5 is an outstanding car, BTW everyone! Great get up and go and nice gas mileage!
