I want to do a fluid change on my 01 Ranger. It has the 3.0 with a 5 speed. As I understand it, it needs Mercon V ATF. Would Dex VI be ok? It takes 2.8 qts and I have more then that in Dex VI. If this is a horrible idea, which it probably is since I really only know Chevys. What would you recommend that’s easily attainable? I know Amsoil or Redline would be awesome but I don’t really wanna spend that much on a beater. Thanks

I would go on a Ranger forum (RangerStation is one, I think) and see what dedicated MTF is being used by discriminating owners. OE supplied ATF in an MT is usually done for inventory economy and isn't necessarily what's best for the gearbox.

from what I understand that’s what Ford says to use

The transmission engineers didn't want ATF being used in manual gearboxes, the bean counters did.
Retired Chrysler transmission engineer Ed Peters said so in a Youtube video.
Many of the GL5 gear oils are no good either. If they state limited slip, it means its slippery and no good for
proper sychnronizer performance. If by chance Walmart has any semi synthetic 75W90 in stock, BUY IT!
It states on the bottle not for fill in limited slips and worked great in my WRX for well over 100K miles.
Google glass transmission and the WRX will come up as the first result.

Good point mentioned synthetic gear oils labeled for use in limited slip rears I wouldn't use in a gearbox due to the extra lubricity

It's not 1967 anymore. Not every manual transmission uses gear oil. Many of them specify ATF.

Do not EVER use gear oil in this manual trans. You will burn it up. Use ATF only. To answer OP's question, no I would not use Dex VI. I don't believe any manual trans, from any manufacturer, specifies Dex VI, and GM doesn't approve it for manual transmissions.

I'm thinking Redline makes a product that would fit the bill... more costly but worth it, IMO....As stated previously, ATF in an MT is a COMPROMISE.....

Whoops, saw 5 speed and thought it was 5r55 transmission.

Still, the 5 speed manual is picky. I'd run the ford xtm5qs fluid, a manual trans lube or the recommended ATF in it.

No GL5 gear oil.

I had a 2002 F-150 that spec'd Mercon ATF for it's 5 speed manual. No matter what ATF I used shifting was not pleasant. I finally decided to try Royal Purple Synchromax synchromesh manual transmission fluid. The shifting quality was like night and day compared to any ATF's I tried. It has a very similar viscosity as the ATF so it's not too thick or thin. There are other synchromesh fluids on the market also, I just used Royal Purple because it was convenient at that time.

M5OD transmission, same as the Rat's. Mercon is the original spec. Dex/Merc old and thick. Back in the 80s, I worked with a guy with a brand new GMC 1/2 ton with a 5 spd. He was commuting from ME so he drained out the ATF and replaced it with gear lube. About a month later he had to replace the transmission. So when Ford says to use ATF, I use ATF

Stick with the OEM Mercon V ATF. ATF is specced for my 6 speed Camaro SS. Most Vettes of the past 25 yrs use/used ATF in their manual gear boxes. No problem getting a long life out of these with proper fluid changes and proper shifting techniques. Walmart SuperTech Merc V ($4.25/qt) is Ford approved as is the Castrol variant.

If you want the best ATF's then look at Redline D4, Amsoil ATF, Mobil 1 ATF and other top synthetic brands. Those come with better additive packages than some of the generic Mercon V's. Just because a higher end fluid (like Royal Purple Synchromax) gives you better shifting "feel" like butter, doesn't mean it's doing the same good for the transmission. You can get a smoother shift feel, and be ruining your synchronizers in the process...could take tens of thousands of miles though. You won't know that until most of the friction material is gone or blinded. From what I've read of Tremec manual transmissions of the 1993-2006 era, RP synchromax is the last "upgraded" synthetic fluid I would attempt to use.

The Mercon V semi-synthetic fluids like ST, Castrol, Amsoil, and others, still have a fair amount of shear vs the full synthetics. The conventional ATF's in a manual shift transmission can be sheared down within 8K-10K miles. The Merc V might get twice that life. And the synthetics maybe another doubling in life.

Treat that MTX right and use and MTF with MerconV viscosity range. MerconV is a terrible MTF.

Don't use a gear lube.
