Thicker end of the range of viscosities acceptable for their grade, tend to have "seal conditioners" that are supposed to swell any seals that might be letting oil get out.
Unless you have a particular problem, stick to any name brand 0w20 or 5w20. These are back-spec'ed by Honda for 0w20 as well, and you'l do slightly better on cold start wear and fuel economy in the timeframe from start-up until you're up to operating temp.

I found some Pennzoil Conventional 5w20- I know it's a non synthetic but it's super cheap and comes in the proper grade.....
That's a top drawer conventional oil. Use it and sleep well.
You can't go wrong with Pennzoil conventional. It's known here on BITOG for great cleaning capabilities, even for a conventional oil. I'd say Pennzoil conventional with decent filter (i.e. WIX, Purolator Pure1, OEM) out to 4-5,000 and probably longer, but you would want to confirm the status of the 5,000 mile OCI with an oil analysis, especially on the unknown previous maintenance record.
I think with the price of Pennzoil conventional I may just stick with that oil. I was thinking of PP but for the price of it and the car already having 160K miles, it doesn't seem like a smart idea.

Do it. Even running it 5,000 miles, you're using better oil than the Honda dealer would put in there, and using it for a shorter interval than your manual recommends. I agree you choose a quality oil filter, and make sure you have a good air filter in there too. Assuming there are no problems with the car, you have a barely broken in piece of very functional machinery. Treat it well and it will return the favor.

I know it's a different engine but my '99 (D16Y8) is very easy on oil, as I'd imagine your engine is as well. I would also advise on doing an oil analysis.
I thought 5K on Maxlife would be pushing it, but it still had TBN of 2.4 so I still could have driven it a bit longer.

Thanks for the replies guys, and Oiltard I sure hope you're right! I think as for the air filter, I may just get new paper one from my local supplier, so nothing fancy. They carry a lot of fram air filters which I hear are good.
HM Civics tend to burn oil. Take this from a guy who's had a 01 HX Civic since new and currently has about 170K. It still gets 40-45MPG. Incredible and a keeper till the end.
I always used 5W20 until I realized the burning. I figured I'd try going 0W20 where in some cases it helps. It didn't. So I went HM 5W30. Burning slowed. Added some reg 5W30 and so far it seems to work. Still burns, but much less. Any MPG difference between grades, microscopic. I know you didn't ask for oil burn, but I figured I'd add my experience. if you don't burn, then stick to 5W20 or try 0W20.

shrooms, I have an older model VX (really the 1st gen HX,
)...getting 40 MPG still at 260,000 with 1 quart/3,000 miles in consumption.
