Recommend me a VPN. So many to choose from!

Yikes. This certainly explains why so many of them can be offered for free. Any chance you know if Private Internet Access or NordVPN is among those VPNs using users' IPs that way?

    Durable & noob-friendly wax/sealant recommendations?

Got some guidance from Gyeon on this (hope I'm passing it along correctly). Q2M Foam was... not a terrible call for the contact portion of the wash, but not the best either. The Bathe products have more lubricity, so they're better for the contact portion. They advised ECO Wash for spot...

    Durable & noob-friendly wax/sealant recommendations?

@2strokeNorthstar , never fear; we did not go the EV route, so the M3 still lives inside. The Mazda was replaced by a rare-spec 2011 BMW 328i sedan (manual, RWD, no nav, no sunroof). EDIT: Gah, this post kicked the thread onto a new page! Hope people still notice my follow-up post...

    Durable & noob-friendly wax/sealant recommendations?

Well, the CanCoat is on! Grateful to you all for pointing me to it. I want to share what I did in case anyone has feedback, and ask a couple of follow-up questions (bottom of this post). I used a post-HPDE cleanup as an excuse to do the more-thorough-than-normal decon I wanted to do before...

    2008 BMW M3 170k mi; BMW TwinPower Turbo 10W-60, 4.7k mi

Liters. This oil comes in liter bottles. Yep. Rod bearings were replaced preventatively with the updated lead-free BMW bearings, but all the other guts are original. Main bearing failure is really rare and seems to be limited to engines that have been messed with. Knock on wood!

    2008 BMW M3 170k mi; BMW TwinPower Turbo 10W-60, 4.7k mi

Previous UOA here. 170000 miles on the engine at the time of this sample. No engine-related maintenance/repair operations this OCI. AFAICT, titanium is an additive in this oil. Asked the lab to stop flagging it but they insist for some reason, so here we are. Usage on this car has cratered...

TBW rating vs. SMART "Health Status" in CrystalDiskInfo

WD Green SN350 2TB SSD. Realized after I started using it (derp) that it had a rated endurance of 100 TBW; that seemed low to me, so I've been monitoring the drive periodically with CrystalDiskInfo. Currently at ~2.5 TBW while "Health Status" is still 100%. I didn't really understand TBW...

    Conti DWS06+ vs. Michelin PSAS4

You need winter tires in a PNW winter regardless, which nullifies the DWS06+'s winter advantage over the AS4. DWS06+'s only other advantage is NVH, which... fair enough. But AS4 wins otherwise, which seems like a much more relevant set of benefits for... really any car IMO, but especially an...

Cleaning tool for long (90mm) M12 lug studs?

Finally got a chance to try all three of the tools I settled on: 1. Standard die (Lang Tools) 2. 2-piece die (Steelman) 3. Counteract SBCT13 w/ SBR12 brush insert The 2-piece Steelman die did fairly good work. This is the one you assemble at the base of the thread and then wind off (though...

Lake Speed Jr. ... Diesel vs Gas oils

The video addresses this, as does my summary of it.

Mobil 1 video featuring a car they make nothing for

I realized it might have been because the comment included "mobil.com" and the system thought it was spam and auto-deleted it, so I tried again. Comments keep disappearing right away. Might not be Mobil doing it after all. Weird either way.

Can't post the pic in the comments, but I commented!

Mobil 1 video featuring a car they make nothing for

It's especially funny because this car is notorious for BMW's insistence that their own-branded 10W-60 is the only suitable engine oil. Again, that's one single solitary oil – not a published spec that anyone could formulate to. Not even an exclusive OE-specific spec, as BMW does with its...

Lake Speed Jr. ... Diesel vs Gas oils

Evidently it's not much of a gamble. That video's been up for 4 years. And, again, it's far from unique. People recommend sketchy non-factory stuff on YouTube all the time. Like every single aftermarket parts vendor that posts on YouTube (not factory parts by definition). And most "here's...

Lake Speed Jr. ... Diesel vs Gas oils

I wish that were true. There are tons of videos in which people push aftermarket parts that are outside of factory spec. Even from FCP Euro, supposed champion of OE quality. I have a serious chip on my shoulder about this one. At 0:40, dude describes how a certain BMW suspension arm was...

Those oils have always fascinated me. I also would love some informed perspective on them.

Lake Speed Jr. ... Diesel vs Gas oils

Also, AFAIR... 1. The perception that they are more heavily additized (more = better amirite) 2. Some early threads in which people got better UOA results with HDEOs that were cheaper per volume than high-end synthetics. IIRC those HDEOs were actually dual-rated, but when people saw "HDEO"...

Lake Speed Jr. ... Diesel vs Gas oils

I met him at a Cars & Coffee one time. He seemed cool in person. I find him insufferable in his videos. #ShrugLife I'm sure that's one of many nuances he left out. I think it's safe to say he was simplifying to make a point. Outside the scope of the video.

Lake Speed Jr. ... Diesel vs Gas oils

Summary: Diesel engines generate a lot of soot. If that soot were uncontrolled, it'd be like sand circulating in the engine causing abrasive wear everywhere. Not good. So, Diesel engine oils are loaded with detergent/dispersant additives to cope with that soot. The trade-off is that those...
