The quality of mechanics that work on your vehicles and the quality of their work is a crapshoot now days.

Depends on where in the country. I doubt most garages in backwoods Mississippi are getting $200 an hour shop rate. On the other hand might be $300 in NYC.

    Harley Evo: Primary & Trans

In most applications failure of plastic guides or pads is a symptom of Improper chain tension.

    Harley Evo: Primary & Trans

He suspects it currently has 20W-50 MC Synthetic in all 3 locations. If the RL is GL-5 I have always attemted to avoid that unless the manufacturer specifically authorizes GL-5. However I suspect it's likely non-issue with the HD due to how common it is to run it without issue.

    Harley Evo: Primary & Trans

Mobil Delvac 1 Is recommended for MT-1 and GL-1, GL-2, GL-3, GL-4 applications. The original manual calls for different products in the primary and secondary as HD used to have two different fluids for that purpose. Everything I've ever heard though says the primary is not a demanding...

SAE J300 vs SAE Viscosity Grade Charts

As I recall the old minimum was 5.8 cSt but I don't recall seeing it anywhere near that low in practice. Likely due to the 2.6 HTHS requirement.

    15W40 vs 20W50

Let your Harley idle in traffic with the low oil pressure light on with 40 Grade or run 30 grade on track days with 300F oil temps in your oil cooled GSXR? I suspect things are slightly more complicated than the raw numbers suggest. While you will see some slight changes in oil temps with change...

    Harley Evo: Primary & Trans

A friend recently inherited a Harley Evo. It came with engine oil which he is going to continue using for the engine (He thinks his dad was using engine oil in the engine, primary and trans). He has access to Mobil Delvac 1 Transmission Fluid 50 (MT-1 / GL-4) at work which is a 50 (Engine) or 90...

Mobil 1 FS 5w40 at Walmart

Most people just buy whatever is on the cap or in the manual (if they actually read it). If they do read the manual they panic because all they can find is SP and the manual specified some other Sx.

    oil change fall or spring?

I've seen the opposite recommended. The thinking being that winter is harder on oil so better to have it in the best condition for it. I have never seen any study on the subject. My initial impression is it likely doesn't matter for most applications. The only engines I change the oil in before...

Mobil 1 FS 5w40 at Walmart

Many people won't use a 0W in a car that specifies 5W. To me or you many products are likely redundant. Others don't have the same perspective.

    oil change fall or spring?

I don't have any preference for spring or fall or even bi-annual, annual or semi-annual oci. As to mileage, I've seen 5,000 mi oci where a premium extended drain synthetic is used up and 15,000 mi oci where a cheap blend wasn't. To many variables for blanket statements.

Mobil 1 FS 5w40 at Walmart

Some owner's manuals recommend 5W-40 as an applicable grade but not 0W-40. That is an issue for some. If I wanted a 5W-40 I would likely get Castrol A3/B4 as it's cheaper locally and has LL-01 (Mobil 1 doesn't).

Oil too heavy of a weight? Blown seals?

I disagree. A technician reads a computer and replaces whatever the screen says. A mechanic knows how to diagnose and repair a problem. Just my opinion.

    15W30 base?

According to 115 of that document the "S" phosphorus limit doesn't apply to any grade if it doesn't contain the "API Certification Mark" (Startburst) and the C rating precedes the S Rating on the label. All of this is in direct contradiction to the information I had received previously that as...

    15W30 base?

An xW-40 has to conform to the same S limits as the ILSAC Grades. It doesn't matter if it has a C rating. Again I may have misunderstood on the other grades as I was researching xW-40 specifically.

    15W30 base?

They don't alllow the high phosphorus on dual rated 15W-40 anymore. I may be mistaken on the other grades.

    Are those SP GF-6 fornulation?

    15W30 base?

Could be the target market doesn't use emissions aftertreatment and desires high ZDDP so phosphorus is to high for anything post SJ.

    VR1 SAE 60

Did Valvoline discontinued their true racing oils? I can't find them on their site anymore. Their SAE 70 Oil for Nitromethane Engines used to be real popular with TF and FC teams.
