Synthetic Oil Life Study: The Book

Hey BITOGgers, how's it going? It's been a year since I stopped taking samples for the Synthetic Oil Life Study, and yet there is still interest in the study. I can't restart the study; I'm only putting 4,000 miles per year on a car these days. Instead, I thought I would do the next best thing...

    Amsoil winding down. What next?

Hey all, Amsoil will be ending soon on the synthetic oil study because of the one-year anniversary rule. Looks like it will probably make the distance without a filter change -- good show. Still ****ed annoying about the viscosity problem though. But anyway. I have two possible considerations...

    Denim vs. Asphalt

Hey guys how's it going? I know I've been gone a while, things have been busy. Thought you might want to check out a little project I worked on last week: Denim vs. Asphalt

    3,000-mile results

I've posted the 3,000-mile results to the site. I dunno where they would go here anymore, so I'll just stick this notice up. Anyway, it looks like Amsoil can make it to 3,000 miles at least. Cheers, 3MP

http://oilstudy.spacebears.com Strange, strange. Looks to me like we could have kept going. How is it possible for insolubles to vary so much? What the **** is going on with viscosity and TBN? Sigh. Grumble. An unsatisfying conclusion. Cheers, 3MP

    Mobil 1 5W20

Found an article about synthetic oils from 1978. Guess what weight the Mobil 1 was? The stuff that had a 25k oil change interval? It was 5W20. Yep. I wish I could get a can of that stuff for analysis now. Cheers, 3MP

    17,000-mile results are in!

Things are chugging along now. http://oilstudy.spacebears.com Viscosity went back down, sparing us another round of discussion. TBN also went down, 4.0 old method and 1.9 new method. Wear for iron and lead is markedly up, after a long period of being fairly flat. Insolubles is again at a...

    16,000-mile results are in!

The End Is Near!! Holy cow, look what happened to viscosity. If the viscosity thickens up at all with the next sample, it'll be out of range and the study will be over. Otherwise, though, it's still holding up nicely. Very little additional wear. http://oilstudy.spacebears.com Cheers, 3MP

    15,000-mile results are in!

And everything looks groovy. Funky stuff going on with flash/fuel, I'm guessing another new machine. TBN: Blackstone's old got a 5.0, using the same Dexsil kit I got a 3.5, and the new method generated a 2.4. Next interval I plan to save some money and just roll 1d10...

Something for the 3k oil change crowd

I dug out the owner's manual for my 1970 Dodge Charger. Here's page 48: In case you can't read that, I'll spell it out for you: Change the oil every 4,000 miles. Change the filter every 8,000 miles. And this was 33 years ago! I think the quick-lube people have one of the most successful...

    smoking 4.6L Ford typical cause?

My brother's '94 Grand Marquis has a 4.6L that smokes when under load (pulling away from a light, accelerating to pass, etc). I know the 4.6L has a history of oil burning, but not being much of a Ford guy, I can't recall the cause. Anyone here know? Cheers, 3MP

Anybody ever have trouble sending in a sample?

I've sent a couple of samples, never had a problem. Sometimes they put a liquid sticker on it, sometimes they don't, but I've never been challenged. Haven't lost a sample yet either. Cheers, 3MP

    13,000-mile results are in!

It's not really what I expected to see, but the oil is carrying on nicely. Replacing the filter seemed to do more for particle counts than for insolubles. The filter change "bought" about 5,000 miles of life -- compare to the 8k sample. No wonder Amsoil wants filter changes with their regimen...

    Prolong additive VOA

One of my readers forwarded along the patent for Prolong, issued in 1989. The patent includes a VOA: Pour point: -27 deg. F Viscosity @ 100 deg. C: 37.5 SUS or 3.41 cSt Flashpoint: 108 deg. F TBN (D2896 method): 6.73 Iron 7 Chromium 7 Copper 2 Lead 33 Aluminum 9 Silicon 4 Tin 13 Sodium 10...
