    5 quarts?

I think many of these companies screw up how much they exactly put in their bottles. In my old job, I'd put 4 quart bottles of Total 0w-20 for Kia Niros into my measuring oil jug and it will always be below the 4 quarts line. Even if I let the bottles drip into the jug for awhile, it's below 4...

    2015 Kia Sedona SX-L 3.3L GDI

Having worked on Kias for a few years, the 3.3 doesn't really seem to care what oil you put in it as long as it's 5000 miles or less, but I highly recommend the OEM Kia cartridge oil filters. Every time I've seen aftermarket ones like the STP, they cause a ton more cold start noise from the...

    Post your latest oil change

2021 VW Golf GTI with 6 quarts of Castrol Edge 5w-30. Oil filter is OEM VW. Will replace plastic drain plug next time since I changed out the break-in oil at only 1000 miles.

2021 VW Golf GTI. API SP oil for Arizona?

Thanks for putting that up. I probably should have quoted it. Judging from what the Lubrizol spider chart is showing, VW 508 is a very high standard. I'm still a bit worried about oil temperatures for a 0w-20 though. Boomer mentions his only going up to 212 rarely. Maybe because the way I drive...

2021 VW Golf GTI. API SP oil for Arizona?

Hello! Been awhile since I posted. Sold my C5 'vette to my neighbor and picked up a brand new tornado red VW GTI SE manual with those sweet 18 inch black wheels. Oil temps regularly around 220 degrees, +/- 5 degrees. Engine in vehicle is 2.0 TSI, and owner's manual basically states to use 0w-20...

    Switching grades and brands

It just depends on the motor. Grandma's 3800 Buick can probably be ran with ant brand and anything that's not thinner than xw-30, whereas a Mercedes AMG V12 or V8 twin turbo may be designed specifically for 1 oil. Everything else in between in mass production with variable valve timing, cylinder...

are these cold flow tests overblown between conventional and synthetic?

I remember this pour test: All oils were 5w-30 at -2° F. Few were more viscous than others. In this chart, 5w-xx oils can't be above 6600 Centipoise at -30° C. Some oils are at the higher end of that limit and some are well below the limit...

New Pennzoil full synthetic "Black Label"

PBL! New acronym. Hope to see an oil analysis. Someone is probably on it right now.

    10W40 vs 0W40

If I had a car that called for 0w-40 or 10w-40, I'd feel comfortable switching between them depending on weather. An engine probably won't know the difference in the Southwest where I am.

New Mobil Motor oil at Walmart

That retro label. This is the stuff you'd use if you have a mullet and drive a C4 Corvette. You forget about those hipster high end oils.

    Conventional and Synthetic Oil Explained

The are still good reasons not to use synthetic. If you like doing 3000 mile oil changes, drive short trips and/or have fuel dilution issues, drive an oil burner, or drive something ancient. You'd change the oil out often. Synthetic and its fancy molecular consistency is useless if you can't...

    Oil darkness

The Toyota dipstick is so reflective it makes my 7500 mile synthetic oil changes look less worse. It's when I drain it, it looks pretty bad. However, the cams aren't stained and the oil level never changes by 7500 miles.

Is there an PCMO that you said you'd never buy again.

Conventional or semi-synthetic oil. It's the golden age for full synthetic oils, and I'm gonna keep using them. It's hard for me to say I won't use certain brands.

What are safe oil temperatures during spirited driving?

I've seen 230 degrees once just going a bit crazy down a 4 mile stretch. It's the oil keeping those pistons cool by being sprayed under them, and that area can get as hot as the exhaust. Think of a valve cover leak and all the oil dripping on the exhaust manifold. It smokes like crazy and gets...

    Lighter oil than OEM recommends?

I'd look the other way around and experiment with different winter "w" ratings and not change the hot viscosity. Instead of 10w-30, you can use a 0w-30.

What oil for 2019 Chrysler 5.7L Hemi

I guess I've been told wrong about 0w-20 this whole time! 0w-20 synthetic blend. I wonder what the true mixture is for that one compared to 5w-xx syn. blends.

What oil for 2019 Chrysler 5.7L Hemi

The most recent Hemis call for 0w-20 right? All 0w-20 oils across all brands is synthetic. The owner's manual in my mom's older 2013 JGC 5.7 says to use 5w-20 and it can be conventional or synthetic. It never states to use one over another at all, however. My advice though, definitely stick to...

    0w-30 HM?

Diesel oil is sometimes used in high performance gasoline engines where it sees more stress, but it ain't HM oil. I've never seen HM oil as 0w-XX. Usually it's 5w-XX or 10w-XX. If it's burning little to no oil and sounds smooth, I'd just stick with 5w-30. Go 10w-40 if it does have those...

    Opened Oil Question

Oil breaks down from temperatures high enough to make it smoke, so staying in an opened bottle that's been closed again at room temperature won't do anything except expose it to a negligible amount of oxygen. If it can be in an engine for over a year and still have a good VOA, I'm sure it will...

Supertech High Mileage Conventional is now API SP/ GF6A rated.

Did you forget about every car before 2021? All oil brands, whether it be conventional, semi-synthetic, synthetic, high mileage will be SP, and the average age of cars on the road is over 10 years old in the US.
