Dead Horse Warning: What's with the short OCI's?

I guess we're all motoring enthusiasts with a particular interest in oil, aren't we? We care about things others don't, like SAE, ACEA, ILSAC, BMW and VW oil specifications, kinematic viscosities and total base numbers. Spending money on all things oil-related, like laboratory analyses...

    Oil stash...

Now at 238 L. I did have more room after all... sort of. Luckily, the sales are coming to an end and stocks are running low.

    Needing decent tool set?

Given the potential for theft I tend to only leave a small number of Asian-made cheap tools in cars. That is, a small plastic box of tools that can be had from a department store for under $100, perhaps with an aftermarket jack and wheel brace/breaker bar, plus duct tape, water, soap and paper...

    Oil viscosity and VVT

Two of my cars have VVT and they are both designed to run on cheap mineral 15W-40, which they do with no problems.

Ever have a routine oil change go wrong?

Massive spillages of fresh and used oil, big white streaks in the old oil, minor burns; oil splattered all over my arms, face, glasses and hair when the old filter is removed; far less oil drained out than should have been in sump. Nothing too serious, I guess.

Ditching favored oil for clearance oil?

Clearance sales are often an opportunity to get something better than what you normally use. For the next few years I'll be using nothing but heavily discounted oil of various brands and grades. Nothing in my stash was purchased at full price. A preferred oil is usually just a compromise...

Pick one and why? Mobil 0W40 vs Castrol 0W40

Castrol Edge Cheaper, more discounts, easier to find, more OEM approvals.

    Oil stash...

Now >150 L of mostly xW-40 semi-synth and group III oils thanks to October sales. The bizarre sales at all major retailers rendered group III cheaper than bottom rung mineral and some 100% PAO/ester synths cheaper than semi-synths. Weird. Anyway, that is several years' worth. I have no more room.

What is the thickest oil you've ran in the winter?

STP-badged 35W-70 and Penrite 40W-70 in an Austin 1800 with what I later found to be a "holy" piston. Anything thinner just went straight out the exhaust.

    Penrite Racing on the Street?

I just changed the oil on my Ford Falcon BAII Egas ex taxi with 544000 km on the clock. I used 5 litres of Penrite 10 Tenths Racing 10W-40 just because I had it sitting there, with the remaining 1.8 litres being a cheap mineral diesel-oriented 15W-40. Can't tell any difference in engine sound...

Dealer oil change: What did they fill with?

Valvoline mineral SAE 15W-40, in a 4 litre 6 cylinder turbo petrol engine Standard service interval 15,000 km How's that for cheap? To my knowledge, it does meet the factory spec, though.

    Oil stash...

I have about 60 litres of various oils stashed, which is a lot given that I only use about 12 litres per year. Most of it is discounted synthetic. Mineral is cheap enough not to bother stashing. If we had good sales and lower prices like in the US I'd probably stash more, but oil is pretty...
