Winter Tires or All Weather Tires

The All-Seasons are pretty good in snow due to the aggressive treads, but not nearly as good on ice. The All-Season compound is a lot less grippy on ice than the Winter Tire compound.

M1 0w16 AFE vs 0w20EP for extreme cold?

I have a toyota that is specced for 0w16, but can use 0w20. I am most concerned about extreme cold performance -20 to -30F. M1 0w20EP still has 20-30% PAO, which does very well in extreme cold for starts. M1 0w16 AFE has no PAO. If I recall correctly, the MRV and CCS numbers are better for the...

    New tires "thumping" noise

Thanks. Is it obvious when a belt is broken when inspecting the tire?

    New tires "thumping" noise

Got 4 new Bridgestone Ecopia tires today. They make a loud thumping sound, especially on turns. I am wondering if they are not seated correctly, or maybe there is a flat spot on one of the tires. I don't think it is balancing, since it happens at slow and fast speeds. I double checked the torque...

Can I go from 5W30 back to 0W30?

IMHO 5w30 and 0w30 is the same until you get to VERY low temp, like -20 or -30. If it gets to -30 in your area, then I would definitely go with 0w30. If it just gets to 0, it doesn't really matter with a good full synthetic.

Change M1EP after 1000 miles of winter driving?

M1EP makes a huge difference for cold starts at -20F. Cheaper oil makes a big loud noise. The cold flow on M1EP is just way better. Also, I always get it on Walmart rollback with a rebate, so it it is pretty reasonable. And the Prius only takes 4 quarts.

Change M1EP after 1000 miles of winter driving?

I haven't really looked on this car. On my old toyota there was often "mayonnaise" under the cap in Jan/Feb. I just assume there is.

Change M1EP after 1000 miles of winter driving?

I know I'm overthinking this one. I changed our Prius with M1EP 0w20 in Sept. I only drive about 1000 over the fall/winter. If I wait until next Sept, I will have less than 10k on the M1EP. But I usually change my oil right after winter is over (due to the cold short tripping). Normally I...

CV boot broken. Reboot? Replace? What brand?

Car Care Nut is right. Never, never replace a toyota CV axle with aftermarket. Aftermarket is junk by comparison and will fail. Just fix the boot. A good toyota mechanic can do it. Just watch the video.

Replace (wrong) Clear PS Fluid in my Toyota's Power Steering Line with Maxlife Transmission Fluid?

I got a 2008 Avalon from a family member. They took it to a large 20 stall independent shop for its lifetime. It has clear PS fluid in the power steering line/reservoir, but the toyota spec is for red transmission fluid. Should I replace this clear PS fluid with some Maxlife transmission fluid...

Best 0w20 for Extreme Cold Start at -20F?

-20 is a pretty typical cold start in mid winter, so that is why I choose that number. -40 is the coldest start I've done. We had a week where it was -30 to -34 every morning for 7 days straight. -55 is the coldest day on record, but we stayed inside.

Best 0w20 for Extreme Cold Start at -20F?

Yeah. I've also compared PP 0w20 to M1EP 0w20 at -20 and the M1EP starts much smoother at those temps than PP. But now M1EP's base oil is mostly natural gas like PP. So I was thinking of trying something else. Redline would be good, but it is way more expensive than M1EP.

Best 0w20 for Extreme Cold Start at -20F?

There is "required" and "better." I've started at -20 with a dealer bulk 0w20 and the car rattles like mad. And I've started with the old higher PAO version of M1EP and it starts smoother by a mile. I've also started with a 5w30 and notice more rattle at startup. Sure, a 5w30 will work, but it...

Best 0w20 for Extreme Cold Start at -20F?

Now that the PAO has been lowered in M1 EP, I'm wondering whether there is another 0w20 oil that is best for extreme cold starts at -20 or below.

Brake Pads: RAYBESTOS Element3 vs AKEBONO ProACT?

Any experience with these? They both seem to be well-regarded. I'm torn between these two for my brake job I'll be doing on my toyotas.

Tire shortage ? Do you think there will be ...

15 inch tire club here (Prius). It is now impossible to find the standard Prius 195/65R15 Michelin Energy Saver A/S tire. This is the MAIN Michelin ultra LRR tire for a Prius, and it has been unavailable for some time. I hope they start making them again sometime soon.

Quarter inch gash from sharp rock in center of tire: repair?

It's in a 2017 Prius on OEM Nanoenergy Toyo all-season tires. I'm running 4 Michelin IceX 3's for winter. I only run the tires 6 months/year. I am thinking of getting another 6 months and then replacing them in 2023 in the spring when the winter tires come off. But if I see a sale on Bridgestone...

Quarter inch gash from sharp rock in center of tire: repair?

Thanks to all for the feedback. Some clarification... 1. It is an OEM 2017 Prius Nanoenergy Toyo Tire. It is run 6 months a year (the other 6 months are on winter tires). It had some dirt on it, and it doesn't look that worn in person. 2. The hole does not go down to the steel belt. It is only a...
