I did a 1,500 mile over-the-line road trip OCI last month by preceding it with a 50% dipstick suck change. This was only because my car has a fuel dilution issue caused by DPF regen post-injection. Otherwise I'd not think twice about going 1-2k past the OCI mark.

The twin-turbo I6 M57 diesel in my BMW 335D is the best engine I've had in any car ever, by far. It's silky smooth at all RPMs and power outupt from 3.0's displacement is just incredible.

Another way to do it is with water or even better, water-methanol injection. That method is an inexpensive, proven way to optimize diesel combustion.
