Should oil brand matter so long as specs are met?

On a different take - - An oil brand may have no specifications other than API grade and may actually be the "best" oil for your car. For many decades I have used Bio-based Renewable Lubricants Inc. motor oils. And I probably ran a grade or two or three lower than as specified by the engine...

Flavors of the year from BITOG past..

I think the number one oil back then was GC 0W-30. 'Bet we all used it whenever we could find it. It came and went then came back to stores. It was never a staple on any shelves. Ali

HPL PCEO SAE 40, 8 miles, 2022 Honda Accord Touring (K20C4), 29.4k miles

I have gotten engine oils analyzed with as little as 15-25 miles on the new oil. What this has showed was that 10-20 percent of the oil gets left in the engine during an oil change. Ali

How long will you run an oil based on time, low miles on oil?

Hohn has the correct answer. This is my schedule as well. It's the moisture that does harm. "It also depends on storage conditions as much as usage, if not more. If the car sees a lot of thermal and humidity cycles and is stored outside, I’d change at least yearly. If its garaged or you live in...

Shell Helix Ultra and the hypocrisy of marketing

For some years now Ferrari dealerships have been using Pakelo products as coolant and motor oils. I have used the Shell Helix Ultra, both the 5W-40 and 10W-60 and prefer the Pakelo product. Ali Krypton XT SAE 5W-40 Fully synthetic lubricant for gasoline and Diesel engines, also supercharged...

Some Engines Are Shipped with Thinner Oils for the Initial Break In Period

I changed the oil in my 1974 Honda 750 4 at 100 miles and ran Castrol 20W-50 for 60,000 miles thereafter. That was in 10F weather in the winter and 110F in the summer. 'Used my boots to stop sometimes while driving on icy roads. I guess I wasn't the brightest bulb in the house at that time.

Some Engines Are Shipped with Thinner Oils for the Initial Break In Period

The oil change intervals for the 812 Superfast are: Every 12,500 miles or whenever the "service indicator light is displayed" or every year. Modern Ferrari vehicles come with 7 years of free routine services. Ferrari of Tampa will pick up your car and do the service every year even if you...

Some Engines Are Shipped with Thinner Oils for the Initial Break In Period

I have recently read posts where members are advocating the use of thicker oils during the break in period. Example, use a 40 grade oil where a 20 grade is the recommended routine oil to use in a particular car. The technical guru at Ferrari North America once told me that although almost all...

2026 Ford Bronco 2.3 MPC now has a GPF

GPF were added to Ferrari engines 5 years ago. Some do not like them as they somehow muffle the exhaust sounds. ali

    Using 0W-20 in a 2025 Corolla?

Even though a 30 grade oil could be used, to better protect your motor only a 40 grade oil will work. Only a 40 grade oil will provide the required MOFT. If MPG is of no concern consider a 50 or even 60 grade oil for the best wear protection. ali

    Best oil Ferrari Mondial QV

The oil that bleeds back from over pressurization does not lubricate the engine. This is particularly important during the time it takes the Motor Oil to get up to its normal operating temperature. This generally takes about 15 to 20 minutes of driving. Look for my articles on this topic. Short...

    Hardest Spec to Meet?

I do not chime in on these much but occasionally so... Like some here I look for results not specifications. I do not look at TBN as I do not use extended intervals. I prefer specifications that are kinder to my catalytic converters. Lower volatility and higher flash points are good. I go with...

    air rifles

Feinwerkbau rifles and pistols are my go to when shooting for target or nuisance varmints around the house. I just got a Diana Airbug Pellet pistol that goes for about $100. It is cheap yet accurate, a CO2 gun. Actually a friend gave it to me. I also have a Beeman R9 (I think) rifle with a scope...

Base oils in relation to timing chain wear

It is difficult to accept their conclusions. These are not fully formulated oils used from the current market. They wanted to formulate oils to all be the same but for base oils. This in a way, might be a study to look at. But you cannot draw the same conclusions compared to fully formulated...

High Lead in 1.8T stroker Motor 25k mi; Redline 5w-40 5k mi

I wonder if the oil was too thick and resulted in starvation from lack of flow. Low flow also results in poor cooling of the bearing that increases the chances of over heating. Is there pitting in the bad bearing, it could be from cavitation. High RPM may "thicken" the oil in the bearing from...

How much cleaning to expect with Renewable Lubricants oil?

I have used RLI for 20 years in all our cars and trucks, all having about 500 to 800 BHP. Always a clean engine. Also, oil analysis has always shown less wear metals than any other motor oil used in these engines. RLI PCMO is my go-to oil despite lacking just about every (paid for)...
