Split rims on old trucks and trailers

There's two types that I've seen. First, there's the bolt together half rims but I've never worked on them. If you don't know what you're doing and undo all the bolts you can find in order to remove a tire from a vehicle you could have the outer half take off your head while you're bent down...

Ford C6 Transmission Symptoms and Maintenance

Hi guys, I've recently noticed that in my '87 E-150 1st gear starts off solid but feels like it may be slipping after a few feet of driving. I don't drive this van too much so I'm wondering if this is common for the C6 during normal operation or perhaps before failure? Fore some background...

U-Haul doesn't have any diesel trucks?

Wow, I had my first encounter with a u-haul dealer today. I guess anybody can get a franchise. I had to hook onto 4 tow dollys before I could get one with working lights and the whole time I'm getting blamed for having a poorly wired van because, "These dollys all came in recently, they have to...

    F150 vs. Ferrari

The F150 has straight pipes, that's all I needed to see to make a judgement. They indicate the type of driver far more than they increase performance. Steve

Ways of getting a job in your field?

It finally happpened. A friend from University got me a job...I think. All I have to do now is clear a 5 year background check which won't be a problem. At the latest I'll be starting on the 6th of September which is about 16 months after graduation...28 months after when I SHOULD have...

U-Haul doesn't have any diesel trucks?

If you get a light duty diesel in a large truck just pretend you're driving a school bus because that's the drivetrain under the truck. If you get a TopKick with a Cat you're good to go, if you get an ISUZU clone remove the peg under the accelerator. It's set for 60MPH on a flat road... Also...

What does buster think about T.O.?

The last time I was in TO I didn't drop below 90 MPH and was topping 110. Ya won't see me hangin' around there. Cheers, Steve

    Good luck finding used 235/15's

They've all been used up in Sudbury. I've been trying to find a set of used winter tires for my beater van and I can't find ANY in the standard truck size no matter what style. Holy cow! There aren't that many vehicles running 235s that are worth 4 new tires up here. Does anybody know if I...

    Road hazard/tire warranty

He just had a 3rd front tire replaced on his car. I did not make note of the tire manufacturer but these 17" low pro tires are horrible for anybody but the poser crowd. They develop cuts in the tread and I've seen some casting imperfections. We run about 1000 km (600 mi) a week on our cars and...

Where can I buy coil spring compressor in Toronto, Canada?

could a commuter motorcycle save $$?

I haven't read the posts above but here's what I have to say, Motorcycle riding is expensive if you do it right. Gear, insurance, and maintenance all cost more. You burn through tires more often and a rear tire will go for more than 4 13" tires. Chains and sprockets are also an issue on most...

    More bumper stickers

I was touring the States for the last week and you guys have A LOT of bumper stickers stuck to your cars. They aren't very popular in Canada. The best one I saw was, "My parrot is smarter than your honours student." Steve

    Missing engine ground wire . . .

Maybe that's why our Topaz was a lemon. We ran it for about 5 years with the engine strap cut in half... Oh yeah, don't hook your welder ground to a lug nut if you're welding something to the frame. Steve

    American Hot Rod

I haven't watched a whole lot of American Hot Rods but tonight I saw the one where Boyd fired Bluebear. I think Boyd handled things really well. He kept telling bluebear that the frame wasn't the point at all. BB was given a couple days to come to his senses and it didn't happen. I'd work for...

    Another new dealer ripoff

It costs a buck or two up here in Ontario. It differs by province. Tires cost a couple bucks to get rid of but they'll keep your other broken car parts for free. Steve

Squeaking noise in the front, what could it be?

I'd lift the front end and check the lower balljoints. Any freeplay means they are worn out and getting dangerous. Greasing them if possible will make the noise go away for a couple days. Steve

    Getting paint(road) off of car

Acetone or gasoline. Try it out underneath the car somewhere as it may damage the paint. Use a bright light to see if there's any faint damage. Steve

Been looking at a cheap 96 Sable GS

I'll never buy a car with a rust hole again. If the body is rusted the brake lines are too. The car could go for another 5 years but it will be a constant battle if you don't want to watch it deteriorate. Keep looking at cars. Call up the owners and interogate them while going through a check...

Am I Lazy ???? I absolutely refuse to Mow !!!

One neighbour doesn't mow her back lawn and our other neighbour dug up his back lawn with a mini-excavator a couple days ago. Life is bliss, we won't have to mow our lawn for the rest of the year now. Eljefino's neighbour knows what he's doing...there's more important things in the world to do...

I should have bought a Buick

I think 100,000 miles is midlife for the average car around here depending on age. When I'm at the wrecker I see a mix of cars between 2-300,000 kilometers. The lower mileage cars are usually just as old as the high mileage cars. I think VW diesel owners keep their dashboards as trophies...ya...
