    Any Linux users? Considering migrating

Try PCLinuxOS, which is what I'm running on an old PC. Download the .iso file, burn it to a CD, and boot your PC from the LiveCD. If you like it, you can install it to the hard drive. Following this link: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=pclinuxos Good luck!

    GM Layoffs

I grew up with GM, Dodge, and Ford vehicles in my family. My deceased uncle worked for AMC (remember them?) and Chevrolet for years. I have owned three Jeeps in the past 5 years (still drive a Wrangler). Also, I attended automotive school for a while. In my personal experience, there is a vast...

Who are the martial artists here?

I've done Kenpo, Judo, and Aikido training in the past. Presently, I'm involved in a school that teaches a form of combative street martial art that's also big on stick and knife fighting. In a nutshell, this system teaches: kickboxing techniques at long-range; boxing, silat/escrima, wing...

    BMW top-off oil

Cary, Since posting here at BITOG, I've read your oil information thread at E46fanatics.com--good stuff. It's all good info, and I'll probably try to stick w/ M1 0W/40, since it's the easiest to come by. I've got a few more questions: Do you use OEM filters, or go with another brand? Also...

    BMW top-off oil

I recently purchased a '99 BMW 328i that has around 59K miles on the odometer. My question: is it OK to top off the oil using Amsoil 10W/30 ATM, Redline 5W/30 and/or M1 10W/30? I know the dealership uses BMW performance oil, which I think is some sort of Castrol synthetic. I've read several...

    Amsoil 10W/30; 4, 046--2002 Subaru Forester

I'm glad you pointed out the difference between the Mobil1 and Amsoil results. It's enough for me to stick with Amsoil, especially since I'll be able to extend the drain intervals. Talk about cost effectiveness. What amazes me even more is the fact that the miles on the Amsoil were considerably...

    Amsoil spotted in Columbus, OH

Thanks for the info, VeeDubb. Considering my latest UOA results, Amsoil is totally cost effective, since I'll be able to successfully extend my OCI's. Since I live in Marietta, I think I'll check out the Alshire Rd. Anderson's.

Drivers upset as hybrids fall short on fuel economy

Hey, ALS! I recently purchased a '90 Volvo 740T wagon that has 206K miles. Despite its age and mileage, it runs pretty well. Sure wish there were some Volvo shops nearby. Oh well . . . Now I gotta change my username, since I'm selling my WRX this weekend.

Redline oil at Advance Auto (stores)

Thanks for the heads-up about RL being sold at Advance Auto, buster. I've been using RL 5W/30 & 40 in my modified WRX, and have been just a bit puzzled by the results, viz., higher than expected wear #s. Could you elaborate briefly about there being more to the UOAs than meets the eye?

    Redzoil/Amsline 5W-30

Scotto: Does your Saturn use much/any oil between OCIs? At one time, I had a '91 SL and it consumed oil like crazy: usually 2-3 qts/month. When I raised the oil consumption issue with the Saturn dealership, they said it was normal for that engine; something about the cam design.

    2002 Subaru WRX w/ mix RL 5W/30 & 5W/40 2779 miles

Ed, Thanks for posting the remark about the oil temps and the length of time/mileage required in order to hit stable temp. I've always been curious how long it takes. Of course, the stock engine temp gauge isn't much help; and it seems to get to its normal position rather quickly. The only...

    2002 Subaru WRX w/ mix RL 5W/30 & 5W/40 2779 miles

Dave, Mileage/interval on the previous oil changes were as follows: 1st: 3,023 mi/~3.5 months 2nd: 3,003 mi/2.5 months I try to take it easy on the car until it has warmed up a bit; that's especially true now that it's winter. And I would say most of my upshifts are done between 3-4K RPM...

    '02 Subaru Forester 4,647 miles M1 SS 5W/30

With the exception of the occasional long drive to a relative's home, most of the Forester's trips are lights. On a brighter note, I think I may have convinced my wife that it's good for the car when we take the "scenic," i.e., longer, route into town.
