    Mobil 1 vs the rest

I have used Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil for several years in a Toyota 3.5 V6 engine and have changed it once a year with no problems. Mobil says that it's good for one year or 15,000 miles, whichever comes first. I'm puzzled as to why some seem to believe that the Mobil oil engineers are...

    Valvoline vs Mobil 1

"Yep, you've got the truest post on this thread so far.... My employer has a fleet of about 10 trucks. The drivers of each truck are supposed to watch the mileage of the truck they drive and then have a local mom-and-pop service station change the oil. However, the mileage quite often gets to be...

Going to do it! 10,000 mile oci

Thank you 2010_FX4, Tig and DBMaster for sharing your experiences with relatively long oil change intervals. A number of years ago a friend of mine told me that his son bought an F150 and used only Mobil 1. He changed the oil only once a year and apparently many thousands of vehicle owners do...

    Oil changed at 13,500 miles

It's possible that there's a problem with the engine. I bought the truck over seven years ago and it was consuming about a quart of oil every 2,000 miles back then. So whatever the problem is, it doesn't seem to be getting worse.

    Oil changed at 13,500 miles

The engine is a 4.2 V6 and has 204,000 miles on it. It runs fine but the truck has growing rust problems and I expect to junk the truck long before the engine wears out. Since it uses a quart about every 2,000 miles, I normally changed the oil once a year. But this time I decided to go an extra...

    Oil changed at 13,500 miles

This is a Blackstone report on oil that I didn't change until 13,500 miles in a 1999 F150 with a V6 engine. In October, 2009, I changed the oil using five quarts of Motorcraft 5W-20 and a quart of Valoline 5W-20. The truck uses about a quart every 2,000 miles and the add oil was 5W-20 Valvoline...

Help me sleep at night and pick my next oil!

Why not use what GM recommends unless there's some reason to believe that the GM engineers don't know what they are doing?

13,000 miles on cheap dino !!!

I have a 1999 F150 V6 with 180,000 miles and change the oil once a year. I drive about 8-9,000 miles a year and use Motorcraft 5W-20 synthetic blend. The truck uses about one quart every 2,000 miles. Before changing the oil, I run the engine enough to warm everything up and the oil drains fine...

How much oil is left in engine after draining it?

My F150 4.2 V6 engine holds six quarts of oil. When I change the oil, along with the filter, it takes six quarts of oil to refill the engine. It's true that millions of vehicles in the U.S. have oil changes done at quick lube places where nothing special is done, and they seem to run fine for...

    Motor Oil for lubricating guns

All of today's gun oils are very good. I use mostly FS-10 on most of my firearms and Rem Oil on some others. It's difficult to believe that motor oil would work better than these excellent gun oils.

    Penzoil conventional oil-Good/Bad?

I believe that any oil, if it's SM, GF4 rated, should do fine regardless of the brand name. Just my opinion of course.

Are all SM dino oils good for 5k OCI??

If the bottle has SM/GF-4 on it, then it's good for at least 8,000 miles. Please see the Consumer Reports oil test published in 1996. Oil is a commodity and the advertising/marketing is the only difference in today's excellent oils.

    Brand loyalty-Oil

I have no preference for any brand as long as it's rated SM and GF-4. I buy Walmart's SuperTech for about $7.50 for a five quart bottle because it's priced OK and is very available.

    cheap oil

From the Consumer Reports 4 1/2 million mile oil test published in 1996: Testing Slick 50 and STP We also tested Slick 50 and STP Engine Treatments and STP Oil Treatment, each in three cabs. (Slick 50 costs $17.79 per container; STP Engine Treatment has been discontinued.) All three boast...

    5W30 and STP oil treatment

For whatever it may be worth, this is what Consumer Reports said about oil additives in their oil test report which was published in 1996. Testing Slick 50 and STP We also tested Slick 50 and STP Engine Treatments and STP Oil Treatment, each in three cabs. (Slick 50 costs $17.79 per...

    Motorcraft oil question

Motorcraft oil is a blend of conventual and synthetic oils. Does anyone know for sure what percentage is synthetic? Thanks.

Castrol GTX vs. Halvoline...which is better dino?

In my opinion, any oil of the proper viscosity that is rated SM will do fine. I'd buy whatever is priced the lowest.

62,000 miles without an oil change

I believe that toocrazy2yoo is correct. In fact, way back in 1996 consumer reports came to a similar conclusion after running a 4 1/2 million mile oil test. Even though oils in 1996 weren't as good as today's oils. Below is a summary of that oil test. The testers placed freshly rebuilt engines...

    Grease gun?

I appreciate all the suggestions. I bought a NAPA mini grease gun which came with a small tube of lithium grease. I also bought an 18" hose. The total cost was about $17 and I thought the small one would be sufficient since there are only two grease fittings. It seems to work well and is easy to...
