Thanks for the responses. The filter was a Mobil 1 filter, not a cheapie, so I don't think that's the problem. The car has 86,000 miles and has always had regular oil changes -- not at 3,000 every time, but not over 5,000. Anyway, the car's running fine now so I don't think any damage was done...
