    ZDP limits

I'm curious as to which weights of SM and GF4 approved oils have to meet the 800 ppm phosphorus limits, and which do not. Is there a limit difference between SM vs. GF4?

    Lamp fuel

I saw some 1 gal. bottles of lamp fuel at walmart for $1. It seemed to have similar viscosity to kerosene. Is there any good use for this stuff? I considered using it to clean parts, or add a quart for a 15 minute engine flush. Anyone know what this stuff actually is?

    Aftermarket brass radiator

I have a 93 Nissan Maxima with aluminum heads, iron block, and a lead/brass radiator. It has some type of green coolant about 2 years old. What's the best coolant type to use? I've noticed a little slimy crud in the overflow tank.

    G12 german coolant

I've had the original G12 "lifetime" coolant in my Porsche for 5 years. It's described as Nitrite, amine, phosphate, silicate, borate free (OAT). It holds over 7.5 gallons of coolant. The cheapest I can get G12 off ebay for $35/gallon, so a drain/refill will cost $135. If I ever have to drain it...

    Synergen oil and oil treatment

O'Reilley's auto parts has Synergyn oil and oil treatment on clearance. I've read it has PAO, lots of esters, and lots of additives. Any feedback on the quality of this oil or the oil treatment? Is it similar quality to M1, Royal Purple, or Amsoil thanks

    SM/GF4 and ZDDP

SM requirements limits Zinc to 800 PPM max. Does this limit apply to 10w40, 15w50, or 20w50 weights also?.

    STP 6000 mile oil extender

PepBoys had this on clearance for $2. Anyone have a link to a VOA? Supposedly it has a lot of ZDP and possibly moly. I did several site searches and couldn't find anything.

    50/50 mix M1 0W-20 SL, Delvac 15W-40

Seems like it should have more calcium zinc and phosphorus than was reported. [ September 16, 2005, 02:44 PM: Message edited by: ebaker ]

    Thrust bearing wear reduction

Evidently Porsche 996 motors are prone to thrust bearing wear. Which oil type or additive best helps reduce this wear? I know ZDP is good for steel to steel wear but what about steel on softer metals, such as a crankshaft thrust bearing? Is moly better at preventing that type of wear?

    MAF Cleaning

Does anyone have experience cleaning Bosch mass air sensors? They get contaminated by dirt, oil, silicon, or potting compound from the sensor itself. I've read conflicting reports about cleaning them with alcohol, electrical contact cleaner, carburetor cleaner, and circuit board solder flux...

Cleaning a Mass Air Sensor (MAF)

Does anyone have experience cleaning these Bosch hot wire sensors? They get contaminated by dirt, oil, silicon, potting compound from the sensor itself, etc. I've read conflicting reports about cleaning them with alcohol, electrical contact cleaner, carburetor cleaner, and circuit board solder...

    MAF cleaner

The Bosch MAF meters on Porsche, Mercedes, VW, etc. all fail frequently. The way I understand it is that dirt particles or oil residues get on the fragile resistance film in the sensor. Is there a cleaner for MAF's that actually works? It would have to not damage electronics or plastic surfaces...

    Pentosin G12+

My car uses Pentosin G12 (pink/red) which I believe is a no silicate no phosphate HOAT long life coolant. It is not compatible with the older G11 (blue) Pentosin. Is anyone familiar with G12+, which is compatible with both G11 and G12? Is it a better product or did it give up some good qualities...

    MSDS Analysis

I finally found the MSDS on GM E.O.S. Are there any ingredients that look like they may be a problem in prolonged use? I see some VII's and possibly Group 1 oils. Anything that might be a problem if used as a qt. additive? ............. CAS# FORMULATION W/V CHEMICAL NAME 000122394 < 0.0000/...

    Additives and plug fouling

I've been thinking that most of the new GF4 oils could benefit from some additional anti wear additives. Which additives will reduce spark plug life and cause valve/piston deposits? I assume ZDDP causes some harmful deposits, but what about Mg, boron, soluble moly, etc. Will they reduce O2...

    A/T internal seal leak

My old 82 GMC P/U is very slow going into gear, especially when cold. I assume there is a leaking seal internally. Can someone reccommend an additive that might at least temporarily make it better? Preferabally something I can get at the local W/M or auto parts store?. I rarely drive it.

    "Recommended" vs "Meets" specifications

I've noticed that Delo400 15w40 and Valvoline Maxlife synthetic 5w30 state they are "recommended for engines specifying" ACEA A3. Mobil1 0w40 and 15w50 state they "meet" ACEA A3. Does this mean that the "recommended" oils have not actually been tested to meet the A3. Is it safe to assume that an...

    Best coolant for brass/lead radiators?

I have an old Nissan and Mercedes I replaced the aluminum/plastic radiators with inexpensive soldered brass radiators. What coolants would be best. Should any coolants be avoided? Both have aluminum heads.

Castrol TAF-21 (Porsche synthetic transaxle oil)

Anyone heard of this? I have a 20 l. container of this European synthetic gear lube. I'd like to find out what to do with it. It was used in certain Porsche Boxters and possibly others. The closest info I could find was on Castrol TAF-X. It was OEM in certain Lotus and Aston Martin's. An...

Low ZDDP in new oils / GM EOS

I understand newer oils have less ZDDP. Would adding a small % EOS be benificial? I believe the EOS is 1.3% Zn. If my calculations are correct adding 1 oz. to an 8 quart system would raise the Zn by 50ppm. Would raising the ZDDP a reasonable amount, say 200ppm, be worthwhile? Any downside other...
