    Best new car smell substitute?

I’m thinking the slow release oil types that clip to the vents might be a better option than the sprays. The sprays only last a few days (2-3) before another application is needed. I’ll probably try glade. A shame it seems new car smell cannot be replicated through aftermarket scents.

    Best new car smell substitute?

I’ve tried chemical guys “new car smell” product, and I was disappointed. It smells more like lemon fused with dawn dishwashing soap. What’s a good plastic scented device I can use to bring me that sweet olfactory pleasure that I do not have access to right now? Oddly enough I’ve found cleaners...

18.000 miles no oil change in a '96 Renault and I opened the valve cover

What kind of OCIs are you running on your car? If you’re doing something like 5k oil changes, I see no problem running that oil in this little diesel. If it’s something high like 10-15k, why not just purchase very cheap oil?

    We Bought a 2024 Odyssey

Minivans are truly the Alpha Male’s vehicle. He does not car what others think, only the well being of his family. Certainly a refined choice, Mr. Pifer. 🧐

    09 Lexus RX350 with 26k miles

I think the harmful effects of sitting are overly exaggerated by most people. Rubber doesn’t need “exercise.” In fact, if you read Canada’s technical paper on rubber preservation here, use only stresses rubber more...

What is the single best vehicle to buy if you're a tightwad?

and yet, you are the thread starter. I had some passing interest in a geo metro years ago, but they are just too hard to find now. Just went for a Corolla instead.

Mystery oil filter. What is it?

If it is a Wix filter, that may explain it, regardless if made in China.

    New tool thread

I already had to use my new 1/2 inch impact wrench. The oil filter was torqued on so tightly that my breaker bar and all my weight could not undo it. So I plugged in the impact wrench and BAM. Out it came!

Mystery oil filter. What is it?

Looks very similar to this Wix. Because it has those 4 little circle protrusions. Does Wix make filters in China? Would Wix not print out its name on a filter? Maybe I can look for one at an auto parts store.

Mystery oil filter. What is it?

This came out of a Toyota 2zr-fe from my 2010 Scion xD. I can’t find online what it might be. I think the first 6 digits are the date code. 154 is similar to the mobil 1 part number mc1-154a, but the mobil 1 oil filters do not look like this. I wish I could find out what brand.

Wasted $$, aka classic Corvette restorations

I think the economics of such a task would eliminate a vast majority of cars. It would be too expensive and only a handful of cars would be rebuilt for museum use.

Wasted $$, aka classic Corvette restorations

nice cars from a different era. People get touchy about museum pieces that don’t get driven, saying they need to be driven, but I disagree. If antiques all get driven into dust, how will future generations be able to admire these time machines?

Beater: Should I buy this car?

Old radiator is out. Had to remove the bumper to get it. 😔 it was quite bad.

What is the single best vehicle to buy if you're a tightwad?

For a true tightwad, it would be mooching off someone else’s car. My uncle has given a coworker a ride to work for years. It all started with a sob story and never ended. He refuses to buy a car due to financial reasons.

Brand new Electric impact wrench. This is my FIRST impact wrench of any type. I can’t wait to use this bad boy on a crank bolt.

Beater: Should I buy this car?

This car had some steep repairs to make. This gamble didn’t turn out as favorably as other beaters I have bought. 1) Yes, a wheel bearing was needed, but the XD uses some model-only wheel bearings. No Toyota Corolla wheel bearings. I spent $400 on two wheel bearings, since either both were bad...

The dangers of a long beard.

I was inspecting my car while it was running and noticed my beard (about 10 inches long) getting close to the pullies. I instantly pulled back and realized having a beard can be a problem when working on cars. Has anyone here ever had to take precaution due to facial hair or decided to forsake...

    Fail-Pro Gaskets

I’m just surprised to see a functioning Previa. How many miles are on that thing? Must be 30 years old. How can it be tooting around with last-minute maintenance?

Busted control arm bolt. DIY or not?

My car is now fixed. No more clunking. They did exactly what I told them to do. Lowered the subframe. Mechanic told me the bolt came out easily with a vise grip. No torch needed. He even installed my new control arm without added charge. Now my beater drives flawlessly. I changed the oil and...

Busted control arm bolt. DIY or not?

another update: I spoke with the shop and told them about lowering the crossmember to get access to the bolt. They agreed with my suggestion and quoted a 4 hour job. Honestly I would do this job myself if I had a garage, but I don’t so. $660 to pull the cross member, extract the bolt and put in...
