We test drove the Yaris and settled on the Corolla as we did not like the middle dash layout and it didn't have the room the Corolla did. I like the sedan version of the Yaris, but the 3-door hatch back is butt ugly. Cartoonish like the Echo was.

Cobalt or Malibu with the 2.2 Ecotec would be a solid choice. This engine is very reliable and extremely easy to perform DIY stuff on. I think the 2.2 is one Chevy's best engine right now.

Oil consumption in the little Saturns is just part of ownership. That said, keeping the oil topped off every fill up can keep these cars going for a long time. I've seen people on the Internet with 300-350K with one guy who has 500K on his Saturn. They seem to be great little cars.
