    '88 Volvo 740 Motorcraft 5W20

This was a little test to see how a thin oil would do in my high-miler Volvo. Motorcraft 5W20 was run for 2000 KM. Vehicle has 372,500 KM and is driven hard through the mountains 200 KM every day. Bypass filter is installed. Fuel dilution continues to be a problem with this vehicle, silicon is...

    Thin Oil Theory Test

Zero as in no change in consumption or pressure or are you giving the idea a zero mark?

    ATF for Differentials?

Compared with gear lube, ATF is typically lower in viscosity and has less EP additives - correct? How then does ATF properly lubricate the differential in an automatic transaxle? Would it be O.K. to run ATF in the differential of a rear wheel drive vehicle?

    Cause of oil darkening?

I read somewhere that high-detergent oils darken in comparison with regular gas engine oils.......is this true? If so, what is it that does this? I am wondering if maybe the detergents are acting on the aluminum. (?)

To filter or not to filter?

I have a new Toyota Echo with an automatic transmission and am pondering the installation of an inline transmission filter. I have been told by a two transmission shops to not do this as there is potential to damage the transmission should the filter restrict the flow in the cooler/lubrication...

    Amsoil ATF in Toyota Echo?

Hi there, I am wondering if anyone has had any experience using Amsoil ATF in a Toyota Echo automatic or any other Toyota where T-IV fluid is required. What are your thoughts on changing this vehicle over to Amsoil ATF? I would also be very interested in learning more about this T-IV stuff -...

    Overextended Oil

We have all heard of the dangers of overextending oil drain intervals - conventional wisdom says that engine oil should be changed out when TBN is at half its original value. There are many posts in UOA where it is recommended that oil be changed, but none (unless I missed them) where the...

    Measuring TBN

Is it possible to use calcium & magnesium levels from an oil analysis to guage what the remaining TBN of an oil is? (without having the TBN tested) Do calcium and magnesium deplete with TBN? Are there any other additives that relate to TBN?

    AW in ATF?

I was looking at some sample reports of Dextron III and Allison/Castrol Transynd that we were running in an Allison....it surprised me that in both these oils, there was no zinc and very low levels of phosphorous. What is responsible for the AW properties of these oils? The lab that we were...

    Allison/Castrol Transynd

I am wondering if this synthetic Castrol product is as synthetic as their Syntec - does anyone have any experience with this product? Here is the link to the MSDS: http://www.allisontransmission.com/servlet/DownloadFile?Dir=publications/pubs&FileToGet=GN3505EN.pdf At first glance it would...

    Amsoil SAE 30

I have just received my first analysis on Amsoil's SAE 30 in my Volvo 740 non-turbo. The oil that I had previously used was Amsoil 10W40 and I can say (without posting all the numbers) that the wear data (3 samples)was virtually identical to the numbers posted here. Oil consumption was up...
