1966 426 hemi Charger Oil Recommendation

I just started using Brad Penn 1 10/30 racing oil in my Hemi Challenger & it seems to work great. I may mix one quart of 20/50 with the 30 to up the viscosity a little. I think another great choice would be Valvoline VR1 Racing oil. Both are high in Zinc & Phosphorus.

426 HEMI: switch from Valvoline to Rotella T or ??

Thanks Drew. I'll be watching for the results of your test & hopefully, can exchange the Penn 10/30 for 40 weight if the tests come back good. If not, its the VR1.

Drew, I just read a post about spun bearings in a 500 HP Toyota & one guy said racers w/ built turbo Toyota Skylines were blowing their motors tracking on 10/30. Would a straight 40 or 15/50, 20/50 weight Brad penn or VR1 be better for my Hemi? IS the 50 weight too thick? I don't baby it & give...

He would probably have beat me, since those cars run in the 12's & mine is probably high 12's, but he doesn't know that. Not bad for almost 40 yr old technology.

Unfortunately, I only have the factory oil pressure gauge & can't hide a stewart & warner gauge in the glove box cause the MSD AL6 is in there. I should relocate the MSD under the dash & put a set of temp gauges in the glove box. I'll probably do it this winter. The needle on the gauge is @ 3/4...

Sounds very interesting & I'll probably mix them next oil change. Still summer here & temps are in the 90's during the day & cool in the mornings. Is there an advantage using 10/40 over straight 40 weight?

Thanks for the link Drew. Is mixing viscosities a good thing to do? Will the two weights blend? Also, I think the VR1 is total dino & that may be better in the long run, too.

I couldn't open the link Drew posted, but do you think the actual levels are still good enough? Is Valvoline Racing oil a better choice?? Looking foward to the rusults of your test. Thanks, Buzz

That's what I need to find out. I don't suppose he did, but will find out. What's the pluses of "partial" sythetic & is it thicker than full syn?

I'll look into the 40 wt. It gets pretty cold here in the winter, but I try to keep the garage heated a little, so the 40 wt should be ok. A friend also gets Kendall GT1 locally, but its the same as BP. How does the BP compare to the VR1?

Put the B.Penn 10/30 in the Hemi & drove the heck out of it during Hot August Nights, showing the car & racing a few people. I was a little worried about using a partial synthetic & a lighter oil than its used to. I tightened all the pan bolts & even though the oil pressure read a little lower @...

Just got 2 cases of the Penn 1 from the local distributor who'se got a machine shop & races a Hemi nostalgia blown top fuel dragster. He loves the Penn grade 1 & uses it in his rail. Says the results are amazing. I'll try to post pics. Last nite, during Hot August NItes, an 08 orange SRT8 Chally...

Prices are down, thanks to the economy, & you could probably pick up a nice muscle car for an affordable price. Lots of people are selling their projects, too. I don't plan to ever sell mine. It stays in the family, hopefully. Anyway, thanks for the compliment.

Spoke to Norm Fisher w/ Brad Pann oil today & he said its exactly the same oil as Kendall GT1. Only the name changed when they were bought out. He's raced alcohol funny cars & has a big time Chevy Stroker & says he tests his oil all the time & highly recommends the Penn Grade 1 Racing oil. Says...

Drew, what's your opinion of Delo (non synthtic)? I've read some negative opinions of Pennzoil & don't they make Rotella? I don't want to go synthetic, so will probably get the Rotella dino 15/40.

Thanks for the compliment Drew. I read on the race oil forum that KA426 is going to have an analysis done on the Brad Penn green oil, so am anxious to see what he finds. Quaker State Estended life w/ Slick 50 was also recommended but Rotella seems tried & true even though they cut back slightly...

I sent them an email about finding a local dealer & also ran across an 07 post on hotboats.com about a guy becoming a penn dealer here, so I've got a post in there, too. Can't wait to get some & compare results. Thanks much for the info.

Tried to find a local dealer, but their website doesn't list their distributors. Found it on ebay, but they want $38 in shipping.

I feel like a kid in a candy store...too many good choices. I was on Brad Penn's site & they claim to have 1500 ppm of zinc & 1340-1400 ppm of phosphorus. Rotella seems to be high in the good stuff as does Delo. As far as additives go, is using Comp Cam's additive a good idea? I also bought a...
