Wow, thanks for the replies! I love that I got view points from both sides of the spectrum. Is there a zddp additive that would be good to use in SM oils?

SL vs. SM in older engines w/flat tappet cams

Hey guys, so I was doing some reading and I found this article someone sent it to me or something, but about half way down the page it starts talking about SM rated oils being bad for engines with flat tappet cams b/c the SM rated oils dropped the level of ZDDP which is used for protecting the...

It was so long ago I can't even remember paying extra for TBN but I will be sure to do it next time when presented with the option. I was using supertech dino if I'm not mistaken and I did do a 3Kmi rinse cycle but I guess it could still have some gunk flying off in there. I believe I was and...

    PP/5W20 , 5,700mi, Linc Mark VIII Alum block 4.6

Thanks, so..how do you "UOA with TBN"? I thought my current UOA included a TBN rating, is there something I'm missing? Also, I failed to mention that I had done a full cycle of autoRX (two bottles) before the PP and from what I could see, the engine looked clean at least through the oil fill.

    Best cheap motor oil

Awesome, thanks for the info..I did some googling on the ratings..quite simple really. So, the API rating, e.g. SM, is a standard determining the additives in the oil which may be of 1, or a combination of different oil groups..is that correct? So when GMFan said: Originally Posted By: GMFan...

Thanks for the replies everyone! So, 10,000 miles would have been a bad idea then huh? I was hoping to hit 10,000mi for my next OCI with PP... There is actually a problem with my air filter..the box is cracked, but I thought I had it sealed up well enough. I recently bought a new air box that...

    Alternative to Yamalube

Thanks for the replies on this post everyone..it's been quite a while since I've been on and for some reason I don't receive emails updates for my subscribed topics. I'm guessing we're just going to go with an inexpensive SM rated oil.. I keep wanting to go back to Super Tech full synthetic...

Oh, also, so if it isn't a name brand but states it is an SM oil it still might not match up to the specifications?

Thanks for the reply..I looked around the home page for a description glossary to find out what "SM" stands for, but I was unable to find one. Can anyone point me to an explanation of the different types and grades and what not? Thanks again

So, I got this done a while ago but never posted it up...what do you guys think? Was it lined up to go till 10K? I think I changed it at 7500mi. Here's the report: CLIFF: Interesting to see you haven't changed this oil out yet, because it's still good to use. Wear was very good in this sample...

Hey guys, I made a similar post over in the DCMO forum...I'm wondering what you experts think the best cheap oil filter is. I figured this would have been a common post but to my surprise I didn't find it in a search. I intend to run PP once again in my Mark VIII which has a 4.6 all aluminum...
