Is there any downside, other than cost and time, to changing you vehicles oil too soon? Is there a 'break in' of oil that makes it more effective after its had some miles?

Is there any analysis that compares changing the filter of every other oil change vs every oil change? Many manuf's recommend that it is done every other OCI. I would really enjoy finding some data to back up and substantiate this recommendation. Thanks
