1976 VW Bus / Kombi - oil recommendation

VR1 is not easy to get in Australia.

Not sure if it’s the Synerlec, but I’ve noticed after a couple of thousand kilometres that the engine is running really smooth at idle. I’ve had several times where I’ll stop at traffic lights and find myself looking at the tachometer to check it’s actually running!

Yes, that would work as long as pressure doesn’t get too high. The 5W30 has done the trick for me :-)

I didn’t notice it running any smoother with Synerlec. Having said that, I was focussed on temperatures and pressure so may not have noticed.

Thanks SR5, I love the data you’ve provided in that analysis! It looks like I can have a lot of confidence in this oil providing great protection and cleanliness to my engine. Yes, I guess it’s overkill on a 70HP flat tappet engine with red line 5,400 rpm, but I like spending a little extra on...

I did the oil change today. Penrite Racing 10 10W-40 out, Royal Purple HPS 5w30 in. I’m pleased with the viscosity change. At 70 deg C oil temp and 2,500 rpm I’m now getting 41 PSI. The factory manual says it should be “at least 28 PSI” under these conditions. Previously with 10W-40, I was...

I already had my big boy engineer pants on; that’s why I bought Royal Purple HPS. But I’m also a good enough engineer to know there is plenty to learn about specialist fields. The members on here seemed quite knowledgeable hence the reason for the inquiry. All in the name of learning something...

Yes it is, in this cooling system. When pressure is high, the oil pressure relief valve opens and bypasses the internal oil cooler. As a consequence, the oil will get hotter and hotter until the oil thins out enough for the oil pressure to drop. The minimum ideal oil pressure is 10 PSI per 1000...

Sorry, what do you mean by “a strong detergent TBN of 9.8…”? I would be keen to continue using Penrite 10-Tenths if it’s a great oil for the job. I can order the Racing 5 in if needed. I don’t get why Penrite would discourage using this and encourage EDS 10 instead? They had some concern about...

I checked the Castrol product selector and it offered only Castrol GTX. Edge is available on their site, but it avoids selecting it. I don’t understand why they would only offer their lowest tier oil.

I looked at what Valvoline choices were available in local stores a week ago and ended up totally confused. The Valvoline Australia web site product selector offers the Premium Mono 30 as the only option for a 76 Kombi! I know there are many who swear by the mono grades, particularly in the type...

Yes, it’s air cooled. I’ve got 10W-40 in it now. Oil pressure is too high, so I’m going to try 5w30.

Nice dubs! The 86 would be water cooled yes? And the 65 with a type 1 engine. My 2L is a type 4; they tend to run hot. And I’ve got the full Australian VW Campmobile conversion with auto transmission, so mine runs really hot! To be honest though, this is all just a bit of a hobby. I’m enjoying...

1976 VW Bus / Kombi - oil recommendation

Yes I have. But at the moment the oil pressure is too high even by VW’s recommendations which uses 70 deg C as a reference (it’s not the recommended operating temperature I know, but at that temp my pressure is on the high side). So I’m keen to see what a 5w30 does compared with the...

1976 VW Bus / Kombi - oil recommendation

I was originally going to use the Penrite Racing 5 (5w30), but it’s hard to get compared to Racing 10. And then Penrite advised me on their technical forum they would prefer I use the Penrite EDS 10 which has about 1000ppm ZDDP and I’m concerned whether that’s a bit borderline. It’s also not a...

1976 VW Bus / Kombi - oil recommendation

Yes, I’m regularly on thesamba but I don’t find the engine oil advice on there very technically based. I do a few long trips a year and those can include days over 40 deg C whilst cruising on the freeway. The kombi oil slowly gets hotter and hotter the longer you drive. It has an 010 automatic...

1976 VW Bus / Kombi - oil recommendation

I have a 1976 Volkswagen Bus / Kombi / Transporter with a stock 2L engine including stock flat tappets (no hydraulic lifters). It’s Australian delivered so it’s dual Solex carburettors and no exhaust gas recirculation equipment. The only modification is an external oil filter and oil cooler. The...
