    Oil Spec STJLR 51.5122

I’ve read this response several times and I appreciate your expertise and insight. Basically, to extrapolate from your response a course of action: get the best quality oil and don’t worry about weight. Not so sure about “getting places faster” I think in fact a lighter weight oil would get...

    Oil Spec STJLR 51.5122

Thank you for the comprehensive response!! I totally agree with everything you said. I currently have penzoil platinum euro LX 0w30 ready to put in. Mine has 127k miles and had the coolant pipes and pump done 2 years ago. A few months ago it had the valve covers done and they inspected the...

    Oil Spec STJLR 51.5122

Ohh no problem, thankfully I was able to find a gas station with everything I needed to drain and refill with lighter oil. I got the oil from my father in laws garage, free lol. I’ve always gone for slightly thicker oils and a fan of Rotella, this was the first time I ever had any issues...

    Oil Spec STJLR 51.5122

I’ve put 15w45 oil into a honda with a k24 once and it had serious issues, above 2500rpm it would try to go into vtec mode and have strong bucking and lack of power until I changed out the oil for the right weight. My guess is the oil was to thick to operate the VVT properly

    Oil Spec STJLR 51.5122

I don’t want to get this thread shut down too but if too thick of an oil is used in an engine it could cause damage (reduce longevity) I’m still just trying to figure out why this engine was never recommended to be used with 5w30 at any time under in conditions in any environment when most...

    Oil Spec STJLR 51.5122

What do you think about that increase in supposed protection? Any potential downside as far as engine longevity?

    Oil Spec STJLR 51.5122

Tell me more, why did you choose 5w30 and 0w40 for your AJ133 5.0 V8? The original spec was 5w20 and then changed to 0w20 I’ve done so much research on all this it makes my head spin. In the end I ended up leaning towards a euro spec 0w30 but I’m really not sure. I haven’t changed it yet...

    Oil Spec STJLR 51.5122

Ohh yea I see that now. I know you’ve responded to some of my posts, did you have a specific recommendation for the best oil for this engine? I’ve come around to thinking 5w30 is actually not ideal for the quickest pressurization of the timing chain tensioners. So I’m looking at just meeting...

    Oil Spec STJLR 51.5122

Hi Goakhan, thank you for this information! Just wanted to check in with you now a couple years later and see if anything has changed or if this would still be your top recommendation for the 5.0 v8 aj133

    Hypothetical 0w20 vs 5w20 vs 5w30 question

Thanks for the response. I’ve probably spent 40 hours researching motor oil the past week. And that is in addition to countless hours in the past before 0w20 became the new standard. I’ll try to look for your compilation thread. Have you formed an opinion on the matter?

    Hypothetical 0w20 vs 5w20 vs 5w30 question

Opinions wanted I know any decent brand full synthetic will suffice, but I want to know: given the same brand and line of oil, will one provide marginally better protection from wear, shear, heat dissipation or any other measure? The specific engines I’m asking about are a JLR AJ133 and a...

    Oil for Land Rover NA AJ133 5.0 V8 LR4

For sure, thank you! The coolant crossover pipes and water pump were replaced 2-3 years ago with the “updated” Land Rover parts. So I’m hoping to make it another 10k miles or 2 years before tearing the whole thing down for timing chains and I’ll definitely put in the aluminum pipes if they’ve...

    Oil for Land Rover NA AJ133 5.0 V8 LR4

That all makes sense to me, I do want to jump to 5w-30 and it makes sense to just get the best, latest stuff out there. I’m just trying to think it all through and make sure I’m not missing something. My main goal is to keep the timing chain and tensioner as clean as possible!

    Oil for Land Rover NA AJ133 5.0 V8 LR4

Thank you for the input! I also feel like 5w30 would be best for this engine at 127k miles but I don’t have enough concrete evidence to make the change yet, when JLR wants me to go to 0w20 instead! It’s not really a ford engine, designed by JLR but produced during ford ownership at a ford...
