So are Purolator oil filters the replacement for Fram going forward? This was the Walmart isle at my nearest store.

Through all the yt videos I watched about filters, M1 always had very good reviews. I put on a Fram Ultra on Tuesday, that I bought 2 months ago. I'm thinking M1 will be my go to from now on. The rough outer grip surface of the ultra will be missed. Gots to erase Fram XG 7313 from my memory...

    Trying to foam oil

The ( what ) susceptible? More, or less? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I never tested oil for foaming properties at different temperatures. That said, at higher temperatures, the oil thins considerably, and that should allow air bubbles within the oil to migrate upward and also...

When to replace an "old" car....

If you do a total refresh of all thats required under the hood, replace the radiator if it is more than 12 years old. Aluminum core radiators are sealed to the tanks by using a rubber gasket between the two. After 12 years that gasket can fail.

When to replace an "old" car....

I forgot to add, clean the intake air sensors with the proper cleaner. Btw, rebuilt starters are nowear near as reliable as one that was working and refreshed with a good cleaning, new brushes, and lightly lubed in the right areas with a proper grease.

When to replace an "old" car....

My laundry list for renewing a good high mileage vehicle is fairly long. Sparkplugs ( Rock Auto double iridium ngk and use a torque wrench to tighten them ). Waterpump, thermostat, hoses and coolant. ( Do not flush with chemicals or even water, that introduces ions that cause rust. Just drain...

Oil weep at bellhousing, fixed with oil filter? Gen III GM LS1

Oil weep at bellhousing, fixed with oil filter? Gen III GM LS1

Try cleaning the area where that filter mounts, very well when doing the next filter change. And then use the absolute minimum amount of oil to wet the new filter gasket before installing it. I'm thinking that it was just taking time for the excess oil left over ouside of gasket area in that...

    VW engines are weird

Hay, if you think this is a neat way to pack 6 cylinders, some exotic vehicles have used what are essentially two of these squeezed side by side to make a compact 12 cylinder engine. And then use 2 spark-plugs per cylinder and it ends up with 24 spark-plugs. Them's the kinda vehicles that if you...

    VW engines are weird

How many drain and fills should I be doing during a transmission fluid change?

When I did multiple drain and fills with about 1 K miles between them 3 in total starting around 25 K miles on my 2016 CR-V AWD with CVT trany it likely was overkill. It did not hurt anything as far as I can tell, except my wallet. Later I learned that friction surfaces be it clutches of an...

Will Your Car Survive an EMP?

Having worked just a little bit with mu metal shielding to re-direct RF, one thing I learned is the effectiveness of protection varies widely. Optimally, you require metal to be a complete enclosure with no air gaps at all. But that alone usually will not provide enough shield in many...
