    Cataract surgery - WOW!

Definitely easy. It went so well that after the second one I told the doctor I wished I had a third eye so we could do it again. The doctor said these surgeries are what get him out of bed in the morning. Actually, three eyes would be perfect, one for very close, one for mid-range, and one...

No more Wix for me (Wix is good, but . . .)

Frankly, just not interested in rushing to a leak down test. Next time I see my mechanic I'll see if he thinks it would be worth while.

    How does a modern 5w30 compare to a 1990s 10w30

The smoke happens on acceleration, never on a cold start, so likely not the valve guide seals. No pressure in the crankcase, but a slight vacuum at the oil filler hole. PCV screen staying clean, at least for 2800 miles yet. Car seems to have full power, or if not, then these Fox Mustangs in...

No more Wix for me (Wix is good, but . . .)

So I grabbed another filter today at Meijer. They had both the old and new versions. Here is how they compare: Mobil 1 M&H from first post The new Mobil 1 (this one says made in Vietnam): So the base plate has been changed to a totally different configuration of the inflow holes, yet they...

    How does a modern 5w30 compare to a 1990s 10w30

If I remove the oil cap while the engine is running there is a slight vacuum at the filler hole which I believe is the proper condition. Certainly don't want pressure in the crankcase. Looks super clean in the oil filler (photo posted earlier in this thread), though you don't see much down...

No more Wix for me (Wix is good, but . . .)

I got my Mobil 1 at O'Reily. Later I was shopping at Meijer and saw the same Mobil 1 filter, but the one at Meijer had a shrink wrapped can inside the box. Cheaper too. Next time I go to Meijer I have to check what the baseplate looks like on that one.

No more Wix for me (Wix is good, but . . .)

So what is the best brand these days. Is Baldwin any good? What about Fleetcraft? For now I stick with Mobil 1. Maybe try the Amsoil filters. When I went to get a cartridge filter for wife's Mazda 5 2.3L the Fram 20,000 mile had a nice metal backing, but as I recall the K&N didn't, so I...

Hmm, wonder if M&H is why they moved the bypass to the dome end. BTW, what is M&H?

No more Wix for me (Wix is good, but . . .)

They add strength to the connection, whether needed or not. And since we have never heard of a Wix filter blowing off its mount, the extra threads probably are not needed. Regardless, I like having the extra threads.

True, but still prefer the extra threads on the Mobil 1.

No more Wix for me (Wix is good, but . . .)

Wix is a good filter and would suffice, but may as well get overkill with the Mobil 1.

No more Wix for me (Wix is good, but . . .)

At least not for the Mustang 5.0. I went to buy a filter and discovered that both the Wix and the Motorcraft FL1A no longer have the threaded end bypass valve. So I looked at other filters and ended up with a Mobil 1 filter. Here is why. Take a look at how many threads are in the Mobil 1...

    How does a modern 5w30 compare to a 1990s 10w30

In case anyone needs to use a non-fouler, here is why I chose the E3 Plug for the non-fouler. See how the standard plug on the left shrouds the electrode but on the right the electrode with the E3 is visible.

    How does a modern 5w30 compare to a 1990s 10w30

Just for kicks I'll add this photo. I know this is a shielded area but with 156,000 miles you would expect some crud down that filler hole, no? These are original valve covers and I have no idea if the guy ever pulled them.
