Cleaning out a home. (I don't want to own "stuff" anymore)

We did serious downsizing when we moved to a villa in a retirement community 3-1/2 years ago. Sold almost 1000 Civil War books to a bookstore in Gettysburg, sold my firearms (not allowed here ) which was like selling a child, gave away pieces of furniture we knew would not fit and helped out a...

Mobil just called me classic 😭

You know you are old when your skin tags are larger than the tags on your car. You know you are old when you bend down to get something, you think, "what else can I do while I am down here." You know you are old when someone tells you they go both ways, you think they mean #1 and #2. (Rodney...

How many different Vehicle brands have you owned over the years?

VW has been the best and most dependable brand of car I have owned. They have performed well for me, have excellent fit and finish and I have found the dealerships to be good. Can't ask for more. I would never own another Ford.

XT5 dark trans fluid drained at 31k mi

I had a friend who had an Odyssey van that did this. He switched to Mobil 1 ATF and then still changed it every 15,000 miles. That thing ate ATF for lunch.

I tried to retire and failed

I retired at 58 and am now 78. NO REGRETS!! I could never understand the guys where I worked who would not retire. It was not a money issue. They had absolutely nothing else to do in life. No hobbies, no interest in travel, did not read, etc. One guy turned down having 10 years added to...

No name station selling top tier gas?

There is an independent gas station near me where I know the owner. He adds his own package of additives to the gas when they deliver it and uses data he acquired when it was still an Exxon station to obtain and administer the adds. He advertises it as Top Tier. It is not officially...

What $1.7 million USD buys in Brawley, CA

This type of housing arrangement is becoming more popular. This Old House did a remodel of an older house to add just such a structure for extended family. Cheaper to do this than build on a new lot. Allows you to use your own land to help family members with housing. Many municipalities are...

Big Boy 4014 Climbing the Horseshoe Curve in Central PA

Big Boy always travels with at least one diesel engine as water is not always available when they need it. Apparently, she drinks many thousands of gallons per hour with the four pistons (and the power stroke in each direction so four power inputs per wheel revolution). So the diesel is there...

Big Boy 4014 Climbing the Horseshoe Curve in Central PA

This engine is climbing a 1.8% grade through a lot of the Curve which means he ascends 1.8 feet for every 100 feet of travel. It also means he is lifting the weight of the train 1.8 feet for every 100 feet. Note he is pulling five non-operating diesel engines. The tender behind the engine...

Best primer for treated plywood outside?

Is it still moist from treatment? If so, let it dry for a time before putting any coating on it. Talk to someone at a paint store for a recommendation. There are so many specialized paints available now that there should be something that would be a good product for you. Kilz may work but...

The Ford EcoBoost and 5k oil change intervals

I have said it on here before. Both of my VWs get their oil changed every 5000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. Both are turbo DGI engines. See my signature. Both were purchased new. One is 9-1/2 years old, the other is just about 7 years old.
