Is freezing a quart of oil for days on end at sub-freezing temps realistic or even relevent to the real world conditions a engine and oil will actually encounter? Not at all. I guess there's a little bit of novelty in freezing oil samples, so people still do it.

What to do with that 305? Pull it and put a big block in it. j/k Seriously though, with 118k on it I'd run a quality dino like Mobil 5000 10W30 and call it good. Chances are real good that the trans is going to die before the engine anyways.

If it were mine, I'd have Mobil 1 15W50 in it. If I didn't want to run a synthetic, I'd use 15W40 Mobil Delvac 1300 or Valvoline VR1 Racing 20W50 in it.

If this is a GM Performance Parts 502 crate engine, I'd stay away from a 10W30. All GM 502s from the beginning, that I'm aware of, have low tension piston rings in them. A thicker oil is necessary to keep oil consumption down. Not that it's "bad" per se, but this is a quirk of the 502. I'd stay...

10W30 will be fine until he drains it. Whoever owned it before him put some serious miles on it though.

I personally would've stayed with Mobil 1. If Mobil 1 is good enough for the 505hp LS7, it's plenty good for a ~400hp LS1.

I run the Mobil 1 5W40 in my 04 2.0. Prior to the Mobil 1, I ran Shell Rotella T syn 5W40 in it. You can't go wrong with either of them, but the Mobil 1 is a better buy for the money.
