    Varnish with Synthetic Oil question

It's an iron block version of an LS-III w/aluminum heads. So I would *guess* by nature that it would be. I'm sometimes not gentle on it however...Summer sees plenty of hauling and stop-light rips. ^.^ Time and further age will tell.

    Varnish with Synthetic Oil question

The manual states for my model year that non-SS models use a semi-synthetic for full OCI. (If I remember correctly) A complete oil change at OCI indicated by OLM and a filter swap. It's then footnoted* *You may use semi synthetic in SS models for a reduced OCI period of about 50% of indicated...

    Varnish with Synthetic Oil question

The truck is an '03 Silverado SS, 6L LQ9 engine. Previous history and service unknown. She's had 4, Mobil-1 full synthetic changes since my acquisition. Depending on season, it flip flops between 5W-30 EP & 0w-40 FS eurocar. I follow the OLM. (It triggers anywhere from 6500~7500 miles) The...

    Varnish with Synthetic Oil question

Looks like synthetic absolutely did the same "horrible" things to my very similar engine. 🤔😋 Terrible, just terrible. HOW can oil and engine makers get away with this shizznit? O.o

Thin vs Thick Discussion, Chapter 7

I was read to remember the xW-whatever rating was for a chilled sump. The lower the xW-123 number (speaking for x) the less the oil gelled up through a test orifice, implying an immediate oil pump charge up through the upper valvetrain and the big end. That oil is there matters more than brand...

Does anyone here have a JDM mini truck? KEI

There is something wickedly charming about a vehicle that uses your own knees as part of the crash intrusion system/front crumple zone. ^.^ Kidding aside, the years I spent working at a campus' Comp. SCI. and Electrical Engineering program for the college of engineering: you couldn't turn your...

What are you working on today?

Those things really skeer me too. I've heard stories... you know from a friend of a friend's uncle's roomate 'n such. It's the sort of thing you recall hearing about when you pick up a shiny new one in the box at Harbor Fright. (Not a typo) And then you drop it like it stung you. ^.^

What are you working on today?

Busy day today with break in weather, Temperature, and not fighting bugs and the pollen fuzzy things that fall out of the water oaks into open engines. Valve covers done on Chevy 6.0, LQ9 engine. Not a bad job, hardest stud to access is tucked up under the passenger side firewall. Removing #8...

    Really? What are your thoughts?

My thoughts? I put on Car Wizard videos right after about several shots of straight vodka. Puts me to sleep every time.

FelPro vs OEM valve cover gasket

Yes, and report to dealership seasonally to get factory approved summer and winter air or a custom nitrogen blend in your tires. 🤑 I never sweated any repair using either Felpro or Mahle. But some Asian applications can be instalation, cleanliness and additional sealant sensitive. Just pay...

    GM vortec 5.3L- ‘07-‘13 (5w-30) vs ‘14-‘18 (0w-20)

I also vote for an "I wouldn't". Not in the older/ classic GM SBC's, TBI's or Vortec series engines. Especially dependant on application: I certainly would not ever do it on a truck or a performance spec enginebody application.

    Need opinion on Nissan Frontier

Lol, yeah- is more important is just kept clean than what you clean it with. I have longevity of shine and appearance products, cheap off the Walmart shelf that whips the tails off any professional wash 'n' clean going through a wash bay and recently, passing through a "professional" wash outfit...

    Progressive Insurance Snapshot Device

I just don't subscribe to Onstar, Sirrus, XM Radio or any other connected car services. I carry a cellphone and that's about it. It alone tattles more than enough.

Late Model Subaru 2.5L Boxer Engine Oil Choice ?

A new to my brother Scooby 2.5 was just eating his lunch between oil and filter changes My classic EJ-22 thrived on a 40 weight. (95 model year) His much more modern 2.5 boxer took much better to a 30 grade synthetic in a pennzoil fluid. Not too much heavier than the 20 grade previously...

    2021 Dodge Ram Classic

I would wager that you'd be better served with a v-8 standard engine and layout/ equipment payload. The difference between any 6 or 8 cylinder packages in a non-HEMI are so negligible as far as fuel economy and maintenence demands are moot as far as I'm concerned. As other experienced minds...

    GM vortec 5.3L- ‘07-‘13 (5w-30) vs ‘14-‘18 (0w-20)

There is nothing wrong or aberrant in going one grade up. Especially as the engine ages up, and in the case of direct injecting gas motors with variable displacement... General *opinion* is the skip-fire-skip routine they go through apparently hammer-hammer-dogs at the valves and lifters...

Is Mobil 1 0w40 still one of the best all around choices?

I use it in a '03 vintage, power dense pushrod v-8 domestic with port injection. Use it in air cooled tractor, pressure washer. Won't put it into a modern Dexos required 5w-30 V-6. Troubles in the applications I choose? None. It's a stonkin' hard a**ed oil whatever you put it into that may...

    Progressive Insurance Snapshot Device

Those of us that have at the least an '03 or later, having an XM,Sirrus or a connected cellular vehicle plan that allows hot-spot-2-WiFi connections? You're on the radar. Same as cable or satellite TV or a cell plan. Not jibing at you, but us poor proletariat types are on the phone the second...

FelPro vs OEM valve cover gasket

I found that in many(not all) Asian vehicle applications, wherever a gasket is prescribed, a cross-cross-dot-dot of Permatex Grey in a few spots is required too. (Speaking from Nissan experience) Check your FSM if available.

    Cleaning parts without parts washer

If leak chasing, Dawn ultra is PH neutral and won't attack metals. Neither will SuperTech engine cleaner. Both clean and clear super fast on cold engine and generous hose water dousing. Add a florescent dye in anything suspect and check at night with UV flashlight after a day or two of usual...
