    Castrol SLX 0w30 SL/A3, 2000 Camry 2.2L, 3018km

Wow, that's a wide variety of viscosities you've tried! Subjectively, how does the engine feel/sound on the SLX 0W-30 compared to the thicker viscosity oils?

    Magnesium- good or bad??????

Yes I believe Mg helps keep things clean. M1 has about 20 ppm of Mg, whereas GC has 120 ppm; in my experience GC keeps things a little bit cleaner in BMWs. Then again, it could be the esters. BMW's synthetic has only 10 ppm of Mg and it really tends to leave a mess. Now I'm really tempted...

ATF abnormal UOA report, 2002 Honda Odyssey transmission, Honda ATF

I had a '99 Accord EX V6 with the supposedly troublesome automatic transmission, and found that partial ATF changes smoothed out the shifting a LOT. Had I kept that car, I would have done partial ATF changes at every (or every other) engine oil change (I was using M1 5W-30 & factory oil filters...

    Oil Change remorse

No worries, since you've been using M1 before, I'm sure your engine is very clean anyway.

How often do ya'll change your oil filter

chefwong, the BMW oil filter is engineered to go 15,000 to 17,000 miles. Just look up the UOAs I've posted on a 2000 BMW 528i. After 15,000 miles, the insolubles are at a perfectly acceptable 0.4 (you want it to be Replacing the BMW oil filter before 15,000 miles is a complete waste of money.

    Must decide! M1 0w-40 or 5w-40 for Dad's 2000 MB I-6.

I'd stick with what Mercedes has been using, M1 0W-40. It has the relevant MB approvals, ie, MB 229.3 and 229.5. Delvac 1/M1 5W-40 doesn't.

2,000 miles on Jiffy Lube oil & Fram filter--1999 Chevy Camaro "3800 Series II" V6

Hmm! Perhaps it was bulk Pennzoil then? It was a Pennzoil oil filter (in other words, a Fram with yellow paint on it). Not bad, but I think those clowns at Iffy Lube overinflated the tires--the fronts were at 52 psi and the rears were at 40 psi! Recommended is 30 all around, and 44 max...

    German Castrol where?????

Also, in the newer bottles, they moved the "Made in Germany" text over to the right-hand side. (These are the bottles that say "Outperforms" on the front)

    Dump it or test it?

Nah don't dump it... if you want to, change the oil filter and do a top-off. What kind of engine/car?

    Does synthetic heat up quicker?

My friend's '01 A4 2.8Q also has an oil temperature gauge, and at first I thought it was broken because it sat over to the left for so long. Takes forever to get the oil hot...

2,000 miles on Jiffy Lube oil & Fram filter--1999 Chevy Camaro "3800 Series II" V6

It's my friend's car, he's headed out to Iraq in about an hour (he's a 1LT in the U.S. Army) He asked me to change the oil, basically look after it, and drive it a few times a month (his wife doesn't drive stick). I figured I'd run a UOA to be sure nothing was amiss... Hmm, probably time for...

2,000 miles on Jiffy Lube oil & Fram filter--1999 Chevy Camaro "3800 Series II" V6

Yeah not bad at all. Almost purely short trip driving... this engine is probably easy on its oil? This is an OHV engine right? Are these less abusive on oil compared to OHC designs?

    GC 0W30 02 Maxima 1707 miles

Love this oil. I have some Delvac 1 that I was intending on using in my turbo car, but I think I'll stick with GC.

  19. Q

What company makes BMW oil in the U.S.?

The best for his BMW? IMO that would be GC. BMW's oil gets too far depleted after a 15,000 mile interval.
