European HDEO users in Gasoline engines?

That's interesting, thankyou for the info. The Engine was designed in 1974,and first ran in a car in 1979,so i'm not sure about the type of rubber used for the seals. It may be safer for me to just stick with the Shell product for cleaning? Would an Ester oil really clean that much better than a HDEO?

European HDEO users in Gasoline engines?

I can now get Shell Rimula RT4X 15w40 fairly cheaply.Just wondering if i should use this HDEO in my older car,1985 Ford Escort,in place of Total Quartz 10w40.If this oil has better cleaning properties, then that can't hurt an older Engine.

    Penrite Vantage

I always wanted to try Penrite oils, and found a couple of distributors in the UK selling some of the classic vintage and veteran grades like 25w70,along with the 10 Tenths Racing grades, but it's just too expensive for me to justify at the moment. For 5 litres of the 10 Tenths Racing 10w40 it's...

    Molyslip 2001E

Has anyone used Molyslip 2001E and had good results? Would this just be pretty much the same as LM Mos2.It is apparently 0.5 micron size Mos2 and will not clog filters.Thinking it might be a good anti wear additive to use in any old,pre 1990 engine,or are these Mos2 additives really just snake...

    SJ replacement?

The cam is a Roller Follower design,so not sure if the 220lbs is seat pressure,or 'over the nose'.For comparison the BL A series Engine has a load pressure of 125lbs.

    SJ replacement?

Would a high ZDDP SJ oil benefit a European 4 cylinder Engine that runs a very stiff valve spring arrangement, the load at full lift is apparently 220lbs.The Engine is known for Cam wear,i am currently running an SL 10w40,but this oil has recently moved up to SN,so i am assuming less ZDDP?

    Total Quartz 7000 10w40

Does the Viscosity Index of 160 point towards a load of VII, or could it mean a heavy Group 3 base or something else maybe.Does colour give any clues to the type/types of base oils that are used.

    Total Quartz 7000 10w40

No worries.Pour Point is apparently -42

    Total Quartz 7000 10w40

When looking at the MSDS and TDS documents for this oil,are the more knowledgeable members able to determine if this product is a blend of Group 1 and Group 3 base oils,or is it Group 1 and Group 2 with something else? I have been told previously that the pour point figure is a typo. I am very...

    Shell Helix HX5 15w40 or Helix HX7 10w40

SR5,Thanks very much for the detailed info.It seems to be very difficult to decide,or work out which is better, more so if you like trying different oils.I have for the last 20 years used semi synthetics in this car,but i am now thinking that the 10w40/15w40 mineral oils appear to be so good...

    Shell Helix HX5 15w40 or Helix HX7 10w40

As above, what would you recommend in an old carb Engine that doesn't do a lot of miles.I can get both Shell Helix HX5 15w40 and HX7 10w40 very cheap, however i have been unable to find the HX5 in 10w40.The car will only be used in summer, not long trips and temps between 12c and 28c.

Shell Helix Conventional / Semi-Synth Oils

Sonofjoe, Do you know anything about Shell Helix HX6 10w40,what would be the differences between this and the HX5 10w40? I am able to get HX6 10w40 quite cheap, but i can't get hold of the HX5 unless buying in bulk 208 Litre Drums.

German Castrol 0W-30 gone from shelves?

I recently purchased some Shell Helix Ultra Professional 5w30,the label states it is made in Germany. This is the first time i have read that on any of their oils.Does this signify a change/improvement to the formula?

Changing ATF in an old car

Thanks to everyone for your replies.I will do a fluid change myself, drop the pan as there is no drain bolt, and replace the filter,no flush. The vehicle is a European Ford Escort that has the Ford ATX Transmission, the same Automatic as used in the US Spec Escort/Lynx.The Transmission calls for...

Changing ATF in an old car

What are your thoughts on changing the Automatic Transmission Fluid on a 33 year old car that has the original Fluid and 50,000 miles.Fluid is Red and appears clean.I have heard a suggestion of draining out and replacing a litre of fluid every few thousand miles, instead of replacing the entire...
