    Fresh Oil = Quiet

If I recall that Chinese paper only found statistically significant changes when moving several grades up or down - not within grade. And even then, the changes were less than the level at which humans could differentiate. As for that table - lol… anyone using that in 2024 should be...

Are you normally a new or used vehicle buyer?

As a teenager and young adult, used with cash. As an adult and parent, new with warranties and pretty much zero interest loans. In 2024 - I’ll probably end up buying a low miles used truck with a loan (will play with numbers to minimize interest paid and maximize returns on cash I would have...

    Silicone grease/paste good options

The PTFE stuff like raybestos should be rubber safe.

    Silicone grease/paste good options

raybestos seem to be the easiest to get lately. 3M and mission pretty much unobtainable when I was looking a couple weeks ago.

    Oil for Sailing Yacht Engines

Sketchy diesel in a lot of places around the world. I’d run a premium HDEO in whatever grade is recommended. CK-4 probably a good place to start. If you are sipping champagne you can probably afford to just run premium stuff as well.

Cost for 2020 Tundra F/R Pads/Rotors and brake fluid flush

No one has missed the point. If he has multiple quotes for similar money then why bother checking online for consensus if it’s no big deal to just pay it. Sounds like cost IS a big deal and myself and others are pointing out alternatives. Otherwise he pays the ticket and rides the ride.

Cost for 2020 Tundra F/R Pads/Rotors and brake fluid flush

I’m a pretty busy guy. My time is valuable. On a whim I went and looked at rock auto: Front Centric semi coated rotors and posi quiet pads are ~$200 Rear centric semi coated rotors and posi quiet pads are ~$150. Shipping, tax… yada yada. Let’s call it an even $500 in parts. I can certainly...

Could Tesla trucks be TSLA's greater accomplishment?

The cyber truck is popular with the same crowd that likes the Rivian. You’ve got a long way to go to make a real splash in the pickup market.

The new 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe is the bomb

When we bought our VW Atlas in 2021 the Kia and Hyundai equivalents were going for $5-10k over MSRP. Lots of reports of poor short/medium/long term fit and finish and mechanical issues with those two brands. I paid nearly $12,000 less than a friend who purchased a similar trim level Hyundai...

    Post your latest oil change

2011 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L V6 165,000 miles. Out: Mobil 1 5W-30 / Toyota YZZD3 Filter In: Havoline Pro-DS 5W-30 / Toyota YZZD3 I just made a quick curbside pickup at Walmart this time around. I do like the smart change boxes a lot.

GY Assurance Outlast vs. Michelin CrossClimate2

I just replaced the GOodyear assurance finesse (OEM tire) off my atlas. Only lasted 35K miles, but overall no complaints about the tires. Replaced with Michelin Defender 2. Very happy with those so far.

Is amsoil severe duty gear oil THAT much better than the rest?

if you are changing the oil at specified intervals it won’t make a difference over the life of the vehicle. I guess if you want the diff to remain pristine for the junkyard while spending more money… go for it.

Would you replace at 4/32nds ?

Put on new tires when you get home. There’s nothing on that drive in June that’s gonna make a difference. I just did it in January with and 5/32nds remaining. I put new tires on when I got home to California.

    Larger 3/8” Drive Metric Sockets?

I use a shallow 24mm 3/8 drive socket to torque my Tacomas transmission fill plug and service the rear diff. Otherwise at 17mm and above I’m usually reaching for a longer 1/2 ratchet or impact. Anything above 19mm in 3/8 would be a one off purchase for me. I’m a rank amateur, ymmv.

    What's in your grease gun???

Valvoline grey synthetic. Used Mobil 1 red before that. The Valvoline doesn’t leak.

    brakes sticking after rain?

Not sure about the caliper design, but a quick clean and lube of the pins and pad ears might be warranted. I had to completely get rid of the OE VW semi metallic pads to stop my brakes from squealing at low speeds.

    New Tire Confusion

The Defender 2’s have been great so far on my 2021 VW Atlas. Stable at speed and under braking.

    Ceramic Brake Recommendation/Preference?

I’m a week into Bosch quiet cast pads on my VW Atlas. Still silent, and braking performance is same/same in everyday traffic situations when compared to the unbearably noisy OE semi-metallic pads. The Centric premium rotors looked to be high quality with good coating on the hub and vanes...

VW class action lawsuit on MK7/MQB water pumps finally paid out!

Finally got around to replacing pads. Went to Bosch Quiet cast ceramics and changed the rotors while I was at it just to be safe. Went with centric high carbon premium rotors. It was squealing the brakes as I pulled into my garage for the change and has been dead silent since the change...
