    Starting Salary

I understand that my company is offering some Software Engineers $150k right out of school, and we get turned down with regularity.

Warranty reasons excluded, would there be a reason to prefer a 0W20 over a 5W30?

I got about 100 quarts of Supertech Synthetic on clearance when they discontinued the 12 qt box last year. Most 5w30 and some 5w20. My beater Kia calls for 5w20 so I'm just using it up in there. Saving the 5w30 for the Sierra, per it's recommendation. When I run out of 5w20, the Kia will...

Sidewall bulge. Good to go or get a new tire?

My 2005 Colorado came from the factory with General tires of some sort... And eventually all 4 of them had those same bulges. That turned me off to Generals, I have avoided them ever since.

water in AVgas compared to regular gasoline?

That's true for condensation on the outside of the tank, but inside the tank the moisture precipitates out of the air and settles into the fuel as a liquid as the plane ascends into lower ambient temps.

Whatever you do, don't powder coat anything in the oven while she's away. She'll find out. 😉

    Car loan vs 401k loan?

The opportunity cost on a 401k is a killer. The better your 401k is doing, the more you should avoid a loan against it. You realze zero growth on the amount you borrow. On the other hand, with a car loan you may be paying 6%, but inflation means the money you repay in the future is worth less...

Manmade sounds that bring you joy.

The sound of a distant 9.9 outboard, while I'm sitting on the deck at my cottage with some coffee at 6 or 7 am.

Need your professional opinion on tires

I've had 2 sets of Nokian Rotiivas on my truck, and just replaced with Nokian Outpost nAT. Great dry/wet/snow traction, ice could be better. If the Outpost APT behaves similarly to the nAT, I would recommend.

First car for son: 3800 Buick vs Crown Vic vs Camry 2.2L....need advice

My father gave me a 2006 Ranger for my kids to use. It's perfect. Poor gas mileage means not too many unnecessary trips, two-seater means (probably) only one distracting passenger, and the kids think it's awesome. It's a win-win-win.

What is the silliest reason you got a ticket for?

I went to a NJ inspection station when I lived there 20 years ago. There was a small crack in my passenger side mirror housing, I put some black duck tape on it to keep water out. When the inspector saw the tape, he tried to wiggle the mirror. It didn't wiggle. So he yanked on it harder and...

Fancy cars and the people that buy them.

I know a lot of people who grew up poor, and want to show that they've made it. Most of those people are living beyond their means, but displaying their improved socio-economic status is their first priority. I also know a lot of people who grew up poor, have actually done very well for...

Do you ever have dreams of lost loved ones?

My mother passed in 2011. Dad remarried a few years later. For the first year or two of Dad's second marriage, I would often dream that Mom came back (like she had been in a coma and we mistakenly thought she was dead) and I was scared that she'd be upset, she always seemed very...

What car or cars would you like to see made again

I actually saw a Citation on the road last night. I was shocked. And no, I would not care to see GM put those back into production. :)

I've got a stack of Champs in my garage now. Been satisfied with those over the years.

What weight oil do you use in winter?

Everything in my signature gets 5w30 year-round. They all started just fine over the last few days when it was between -5 and 5 degrees in the morning. Cars I've owned in the past had 10w30 or 10w40 year round, never a problem.

Run that engine before moving the car

I only let my cars idle long enough to put my seatbelt on, then I'm off and driving like normal. In 35 years of driving, this has never damaged any of my vehicles in any perceptible way. I drive them until the body and frame rust away from the perfectly good drivetrain.
