SM/GF-4 showing up at Wally World

Bottles of Castrol GTX are showing up here that read "Exceeds API SM, etc." but still only show SL in the donut. Apparently they can advertise that the product exceeds the future spec, but can't use the insignia yet, as they can't yet be certified. mr

    New BMW 3 series

Amateurish at best. The rear quarter panel, including the filler door, look like the car has been in an accident. I'm assuming (hoping?) that they'll offer the car in the US without iDrive. What will replace the display in that giant binnacle? Looks like it will hold LOTS of sunglasses...

    5W30 or 10W30?

There seem to be two trends at work here (in dino oils, at least). First, many 5w30 dinos, especially the "energy conserving" oils, seem to shear down to a 20wt within a couple thousand miles. While it could be argued that this is because 5w30's require more vii's and that they don't offer the...

Is this good or bad...no oil loss after 5,000+ miles

Hmmm.. I haven't ever heard that consumption is a good thing. If I did extend the OCI, it wouldn't be to see if there's any consumption. Zero oil consumption in 5k+ miles is close enough to zero for me. Drive it and enjoy it. Sounds like you've got a good one there. mr

Dont Mix Delo with Pennzoil 5w20

Was the jug in which you made the mixture originally clean? Were all the oil containers clean? Intriguing, but I think there might be something else afoot here... mr

    what's your torco oil oci?

The SR-5 is marketed as their "Racing" oil; the SR-1 is their "Street" oil. I'm running SR-1 10w30 in my wife's Xterra. I'm going to get a UOA at 4 or 5k - it only has a 3.5 quart sump, and a filter the size of a baby food jar. The 5w20 has even MORE moly than the 10w30! mr

Have you considered running straight 30w Delo? mr

Should I scratch my itch to switch?

I'd dump it now, but I'm just like that. Wouldn't hurt. You can change to synth anytime - the rings have long since seated by now. MR

    Working on your own vehicle

T-Keith, this is interesting. What kind of mounting machine do you have? How do you do balancing? Static? thx, MR

    Nitrogen fill

Marketing BS. Blowouts in street tires come from heat, but it's almost always a result of underinflation. See comment re: NASCAR above. mr

Best Cheap tire for older truck

I like my Liberator AT's from Wal-Mart. They're made in the USA by the Michelin/BFG conglomerate. Good thing about Wal-mart is that they charge a flat $9.76 a tire for mounting/balancing/valve stem/road hazard, and they have them in every town. mr

[Humor] How not to change your oil

Makes a pretty good case for a well-moderated forum (like BITOG) too. Only took two pages for people to start hurling f-bombs at one another. MR

Manual or Automatic in a truck?

Mostly a Coke/Pepsi debate: all personal preference. I like a stick in cars (with a few exceptions, like Vettes) and an auto in full-size trucks. For smaller trucks, a stick for 4-cylinders. V6's I could go either way. The torquier the engine, the more likely I will lean toward an auto. If...

What makes an engine 20W friendly?

European consumers face an artificial market pressure: a tax burden 5 or 6 times higher per gallon than we pay. CAFE places the fuel economy burden on the manufacturer. This gives the manufacturers incentive to raise fuel economy, preferably in ways that are invisible to the consumer. One mpg...

    Well, I'm Still Using Long-Life!

They took out the boron too. http://pzlqs.com/Tech/Bulletin//DomesticMarketing/ProductApplications/pdf/p70.pdf Sorry, I can't find the VOA on the forum for the old LL SL? For my Auto-RX rinse, I'm running a brew of 3 quarts LL and 1.5 quarts Pennzoil 5w-30 in my '99 2.5l Ranger. I'm...

    Torco 5w-30 SR-5, 02,Jeep 4.0, 4000 miles.

Sheesh - TBN was low. You think the SR-1 ("Street" oil, as opposed to the SR-5 "Racing" oil) has better TBN retention? I'll have a UOA of the SR-1 posted in a month or so, from the wife's Xterra. mr

    Some pics of my Corvette!

Nice. You've got to love a black/black Vette. I'm a manual guy too, but I like an automatic in a Corvette. It complements the car's personality as a torquey GT very well. Plus, the GM autos are top-notch. congrats! MR
