    FYI: Duralast Gold Starters

Don't get too excited. Valeo is also the OEM for my Citroen 2CV and the rebuilt starter that was originallly made in France, but rebuilt in Poland and it didn't even make it a year. Admittedly a Citroen 2CV and a Saturn are very different beasts. But, apparently, they share the same OEM for the...

Who gave/rec'd motor oil for Christmas?

My grandpa got a case of Pennzoil 10-30 from me. He's obsessed with Pennzoil and will probably die with a bottle of it in his hand!

    No love for Pennzoil....

The only thing that doesn't thrill me about Pennzoil is that they sell rebranded Frams at the quick lubes. Even a Champ filter would raise them higher. But, in any event, I do run Rotella in some vehicles I own. Different name, same company.

Alternator...How long ...about are they good for?

My '74 Volkswagen Super Beetle still has it's original Motorola alternator. They only used thsi particular alternator for a year and a half and mine has a sticker saying it was made in 12/73 on it and my car was made in January of '74.

    green coolant

For what it's worth, I used the SuperTech universal in my beater Chevette (it's dyed green by the way) and it's fine. I have to think any of these modern coolants are way superior to what my Chevette left the factory with in 1980.

    '80 Chevette starting issue

Thanks for all the help, it was the starter. I didn't feel like dealing with it so I dropped it off a local shop I trust and I drove away with a starter for $110. I figure that's a fair price.

    '80 Chevette starting issue

Yes, the solenoid makes that unmistakeable click everytime and I do not believe the battery is bad. I also assume that it must be the starter. I hear you about cheap junk, I once had a heck of a time with bad starters from Advance. Now days I normally buy this stuff from Auto Value. If the...

    '80 Chevette starting issue

I have an '80 Chevette I use as a driver right around here, mostly for insurance reasons. Yesterday, and again today, it would not crank over with the key and all lights worked. Both times I was able to push start it and go on my way. After both incidents it would crank over just fine with the...

    99 Chevy Malibu 2.4 Quad 4 knock

We have a '97 Malibu with the same engine and earlier this year it did the same thing. Turned out we spun a bearing. A trusted mechanic said that he has seen many of these engines do this at around this mileage (ours had about 93k on it). But since the car has always just been a spare car we had...

    1990 Cavalier...A sucess story.

I drove a '89 Sunbird from '96 to '01 and while by the time I got rid of it the car was pretty rough looking, it was unstoppable. I sold it to a neighbor who eventually smashed it but it was at 280,000 miles. Here in the rurals of Michigan there are still alot of that generation J car around...

Citroen 2CV rear main seal replacement and clutch replacement

Never fear, most Citroens to this day have single spoke steering wheels. Here's a TV advertisement for a new one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6X7PAdSfHO8 I've admired Citroens since I saw one in an auto show in Boston (I think) when I was 14 years old. They were really advanced. Eye level...

Citroen 2CV rear main seal replacement and clutch replacement

Yeah, the 2CV is pretty reliable. I've put 36,000 miles on it in the past 2 years. But, I also ran into the problem of it having the frame collapse this spring. IT now has a new galvanized frame!
