should i take a battery tester as gospel?

Had mine in the '16 Nissan checked at AAP a few days ago.. Battery originally had 470 CCA and as I remember it now shows 233 yet the battery tested good and charging it did nothing for the CCA. Research online said 1 CCA per cubic inch of engine displacement is usually sufficient. I'm at just...

    Mazda 6 , 20W-50!

I wouldn't think twice about using 20w50 in the summer. I use 10w40 year around and have for the past 45 years since i bought my first car in 1977.

Group 25 vs Group 34? Costco Still Best?

I just put an EFB battery in my '97 Ford Escort last week. My old battery was still under warranty at Rural King and when I went to exchange it they were out of what I had and they weren't wanting to give me the correct amount of credit for my old battery so from home I called their corporate...

    Ideas: dropped well pump

My old well was 400'. I set the pump at either 350 or 375' so if things got dry I had a good reserve of water. I also used black plastic water service pipe for about 20 years with no problems.

    Why do Batteries go bad?

I do the same thing. Last week I put a new series 34 battery with 750 CCA in my '97 Ford Escort with a 2.0L engine. Even doing this I often end up with the battery not lasting through the warranty period I think the best battery I ever had was an Interstate lawn & garden battery that lasted...

Set Tire pressure to Manual/Sticker Recommended or 2 PSI over?

I remember that worked out great for Ford and Firestone on the Ford Explorer back in the '90's. As I remember it cost several people their life and Firestone recalled millions of tires. I've ran at least 35 PSI in everything I've owned in the past 40 or so years.

    Ideas: dropped well pump

As I remember when I pulled the pump from the well where I used to live when I dropped it back into the well I tied some 1/4 or 3/8" nylon rope around the pump so if it got dropped I had a tag line that would stay above ground level to pull it back up with.. I know this doesn't help him this...

    Wife brought home another treasure.

I'm going to give you the answer everyone always uses on such questions. Whatever the owners manual suggests. Their engineers know their product best.;)

    Pretty disappointed in Sonic

I know a lady that was charged I think $2.99 for a cup of water at another restaurant a while back. When they were confronted with the charge she was told they charged $2.99 for the cup regardless of what drink you got. There's a Sonic about 1.5 miles from the house and even though it's not my...

Maximum MPG out of a diesel

I plugged the vacuum line to the EGR on a gas engine back in the '70's because when you stepped on the gas the engine hesitated and fell on it's face before taking off. This was a 350 CI engine in a '77 Buick Regal. Prior to plugging the line I was getting about 12 MPG in everyday driving. After...

Not sure what's wrong with my wife.

Spiders don't bother me too bad but snakes are a different story. If I see a snake, any snake and I have something around to kill it with it's a dead snake. I've used anything from shovels to guns for killing snakes. Years ago my wife came in the house one afternoon and said there's a snake on...

Maximum MPG out of a diesel

I've never owned a diesel but lower speeds will probably help more than anything. When I moved from NC-KY in 2010 I rented a 24' moving van that was diesel powered. It was loaded front to rear and nearly bottom to top so it had a good size load. I drove about 55 MPH on the trip for safety since...

    Spark plugs

I've been using Bosch platinum in my Fords that came with Motorcraft platinum for about the past 30 years. I've ran several of the sets of Bosch platinum 100-125K miles and only changed them then because I felt guilty they hadn't been changed in several years. The only problem I've had with...

Which US state license plate design has been around the longest?

That's the first plate I had when I moved to NC in 1984 and was still using the same plate when I left in 2010. It wouldn't surprise me if that's the longest running plate today.

How Lucky Can You Get ?

I used to play "Powerball" years ago. I think my largest winning ticket was $2 or $3 whatever the lowest prize was at the time. The odds of me getting hit by a train while crossing the street were better than me winning a significant amount.

    new member oil recommendation

I'm not contradicting your advice but I'm using 15-20 year old conventional 10w40 in my Nissan that's spec'd for SN rated 5w30. I've been using 10w40 for most of the 46 years since I started driving and see no need to change what isn't broken.

    new member oil recommendation

For the first 250K miles or so it got 3K mile OC's which were pretty normal for most cars at the time. After that I went to 5K mile intervals. I worked construction until 2000 so it was driven on and around dusty conditions till 2000 when I got injured and had to go on disability so the engine...

Do you have any facial hair?

Not currently. Over the past 45+ years I've wore a mustache, goatee and full beard. I guess you could say I sometimes have facial hair when I go 1 1/2-2 weeks without a shave. Shaving has never been one of my favorite past times

    new member oil recommendation

The main thing is be sure the engine has oil and is changed on a regular basis. I ran an '88 Ford Escort 1.9L to 518K miles over 20+ years on whatever conventional oil that happened to be on sale. The engine was still running with compression numbers 145-155 PSI across all cylinders when I...
