    Infamous 2012 Civic P0171

Common on a few cars with that design from that era including the 2010s Sentra. Replaced mine before it went just from hearing about all the failures. Rubber was mostly pliable but looked pretty thin in the folds. Amazon cheapo was great. I just monitor it like a wear and tear item now. I...

How long does a filter last on the shelf?

I think most of mfg are going to have a CYA answer and the real answer is unknowable - just a matter of how much you want to gamble. Like expiration dates on milk.

ShinEtsu Silicone Grease, the best in the game!

Reminds me to go use my tube on my door seals. Have been doing this every 2 years or so and they stay perfect

Safest way to remove the plastic oil jug seal?

Oil jug I can handle. Don’t ask me about the seal on Costco milk. The bond on that is aerospace grade.

MK7 GTI needs new AC Condenser (OEM/Nissens/Mahle Behr)

Truth is the best aftermarket condensers perform about 80% as well as the OEM. The fin spacing is to blame. This is due to a single tooling needing to cover a lot of models. There’s a YouTube AC savant Tom Lech that has a lot of videos analyzing various aftermarket condensers and it’s never...

OEM Denso vs Denso aftermarket, insight straight from Denso

It's been discussed on here quite a bit but here it is straight from the horse's mouth. Fascinating article that delves into the difference between OE Denso and aftermarket Denso parts. TL/DR takeaway: "Denso typically targets about 85-90 percent of OEM specs in both its aftermarket parts and...

    50psi rental car tires

After I realized they skipped out on the PDI I started to find other things. There was M77 assembly paste smeared on the side skirt and the windshield and sunroof had large suction cup markings probably from the factory. Random nut on n the floor. Guessing the rental companies found it cheaper...

    50psi rental car tires

Ah that’s gotta be it. Both times they were fresh cars. I was peeling clear film off the screens and surfaces. I think they skipped a bunch of PDI.

    50psi rental car tires

Ok second time in a row this happened to me. First at Enterprise and now at Hertz. Rented a car and found all four tires filled to 50psi on the info screen. Door placard says 36. Went around the car and bled off the balance. Anyone have an my insight as to why the rental companies are blasting...

Apartment dwellers... where are you doing your oil changes?

Once lived in an apartment with a parking garage. Wasn’t prohibited in the lease but was the kind of place where eyebrows would be raised. Needed to replace a stripped lug the day before a planned road trip. Woke up at 4am on a weekend and got the job done before most people were waking up. Only...

Four tire options, which would you pick?

Did about 600mi this weekend while skiing. First impressions are that the Vredestein Quatracs are incredibly comfortable. Much quieter than the Michelin Premiers they replaced. Noticed the difference on the grooved pitted concrete on the way up to Tahoe. Usually get a loud hum from that. Also...

    Caliper slide pin grease

Yeah it's a little difficult to sort through their product lineup because there are so many variations, all named Super Lube. Their brake lube product is silicone with teflon but the other ones are different. I wouldn't use the general purpose Super Lube for the job as it's highly incompatible...

    Caliper slide pin grease

Used to use 3M silicone before it was discontinued. Now I use SuperLube’s version of silicone with Teflon. Appreciate the compatibility chart on their website. https://www.super-lube.com/silicone-lubricating-brake-grease-with-syncolon

Four tire options, which would you pick?

Good idea, hadn't considered the possibility. I hesitated to put the locks on in the first place but when I bought the car in 2011, Honda Fit alloys seemed to be targeted frequently since they are four lugs that fit on souped up old civics. Wondering if that's still the case in 2025.

Four tire options, which would you pick?

Very observant! They're Gorilla Locks. Each lugnut is a spline style lock.

Four tire options, which would you pick?

First time at Discount/America's Tire so I vomited a little seeing them throw four floor jacks under the car... A pit crew literally each took a wheel and it was done in 20 min. Used to costco's slow and steady approach :p. Probably could have done without the sloppy tire shine that they put on...

    Headlight restoration 3M kit

Your results are great. I used this very kit exactly 1 year and 7mo ago. Did 2 coats of the included UV wipes. Still crystal clear to date, and the car is not garaged.

Four tire options, which would you pick?

This is interesting. I previously ran the Avid Ascends which were obsoleted by the Avid Ascend GT and they were the longest lasting tires I put on. They started at an extremely generous 12/32 (the premiers only started at 8/32) but by year 5 they lost a lot of wet traction even at 8/32 tread. I...

Four tire options, which would you pick?

Vredestein Quatracs ordered, going to have them installed next week. Looking forward to trying them out.
